In this room alfo are four fine statues, in plaifter of Paris, from the Florentine Gallery; namely, a Dancing Fawn, Venus de Medicis, a Listening Slave, and the Boxers.

The King's Bed Chamber: Here are a portrait of Mr. Crewe; Lucretia, by Guido Rheni, worth 1400l.; and a ftate-bed of gold and filver tiffue, that coft 8oool. It is lined with pink fatin emboffed with gold and filver, &c. and the rest of the ancient furniture in this room is in a ftyle of correfpondent magnificence.

The Dining Parlour: the pictures are, Pharoah's Daughter taking Mofes from the Bull Rufhes, Giordano; Charles fixth Earl of Dorfet, Kneller; Mr. Garrick, Reynolds; Mr. Foote, Romney; Dr. Goldfinith, Reynolds; Dr. Johnfon, Ditto; Sir Joshua Reynolds, Ditto; Mr. Humphreys, the Miniature Painter, Romney; James I; Henry Prince of Wales; Pope, Gay, Swift, Congreve, Milton, Betterton, Garth, Shakspeare, Ben Jonfon, Dryden, Sir Philip Sydney, William Cartwright, Villiers fecond Duke of Buckingham, Cowley, Wycherly, Locke, Hobbes, St. Evremont, Newton, Otway, and D' Urfey, the greatest part by Kneller; Corelli; Earl of Rochester, Du Bois; Thomas first Earl of Dorset; Richard I; Beaumont and Fletcher; Sir Charles Sedley; Chaucer; Prior; Waller; Butler; Addison; a Conversation Piece, by Gooch and others. In the chimney is a curious pair of dogs, with the Arms of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. In this room Oliver Cromwell held a court of fequeftration, and fequeftered the eftates of the Earl of Dorfet, for his adherence to the royal cause.

In The Colonnade is a Reprefentation, on curious painted glafs, of all the Marriages in the family, from Thomas, the first Earl, to the prefent time; marble bufts (antiques, bought at Rome) of Anthony, Mithridates, Pompey, an Ancient unknown, L. J. Brutus, Thefeus, J. Cæfar, Marcellus, M. Brutus, and a young Hercules; and two fideboards made of the lava of Vesuvius.

All the paintings in this room are esteemed very capital.

The Drawing Room below Stairs: the pictures, Lady Betty Germain; and St. Peter's at Rome.

The Library contains the portraits of two Sons of Edward fourth Earl of Dorfet.

In general, it will fuffice to obferve, that many of the rooms are hung with curious old tapeftry; and that the furniture and decorations, which are ancient, and which exhibit a perfect idea of the style of decoration in the 16th century, are in high prefervation.

This Act (See Page 3) has fince paffed into a law; by which, befide the public office in Bow Street, seven other public offices are established in the following places; namely, Queen's Square, Westminster; Great Marlborough Street; Hatton Garden; Worship Street, Shoreditch; Lambeth Street, Whitechapel; High Street, Shadwell; Union Street, Southwark. Three Juftices prefide in each office, who have refpectively a falary of 400l. a year.

LOW LAYTON.

Colonel Bladen's houfe was purchased by Nathaniel Braffey, Efq. The manor, however, is the property of Mr. Pardoe.

MERTON.

In this parish is Cannon Hill, the feat of William Mollefon, Efq.

PAINE'S HILL.

In thefe gardens, which are open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, is a grotto of uncommon beauty.

PROSPECT PLACE.

THOBY PRIORY,

So called from Tobias, the firft Abbot, is fituated in the parish of Mountneffing, 22 miles to the left of the road to Chelmsford. It was founded in the reign of Stephen, and was granted, by Henry VIII, to Cardinal Wolfey. Reverting to the Crown, on his difgrace, it was given to Sir William Page, with the reverfion to William Berners, Efq. It became afterward the property of the Prefcotts of Lancashire; and, in 1760, on the death of Alexander Prefcott, Efq. it devolved on his only furviving child Mary, who married Henry Blencowe, Efq. of Blencowe Hall, in Cumberland. It is now the property of her grandfon, Henry Prefcott Blencowe,

Efq. a minor, and in the occupation of John Princep, Efq. -The house, though ftill a fpacious ftrong edifice, has been confiderably reduced in fize, within a century paft. Some arches are till ftanding, as monuments of its antiquity and original deftination.

THORNDON HALL.

The pictures of the Cornaro and More family were purchafed by Lord Petre, at the fale of Sir John Tyrrel's pictures, at Heron, in Effex. The originality of the latter is difputed by Mr. Walpole. See Anecdotes of Painting, Vol. I. Page 143.

TOTTENHAM.

Mr. Townsend has juft fold all his eftates in this parish to Thomas Smith Efq. of the Clock House.

VALENTINE HOUSE.

This houfe is now in the poffeffion of Donald Cameron, Efq. Mr. Raikes having removed to Aubury Hatch, near Barking Side. The celebrated vine, which completely fills one hot-houfe, fixty feet in length, produced last feafon, near 300lb. weight of the finest flavoured grapes.

WORMLEY-BURY,

Adjoining to Chefhunt, in the road to Ware, is the feat of Sir Abraham Hume, bart.

WOTTON.

A village in Surry, to the S. W. of Darking. In this parish is the feat of the family of Evelyn, ever fince the reign of Elizabeth. It was the favourite retreat of that famous natural philofopher, John Evelyn, Efq. who was born here, till he went to Say's Court, near Deptford, which had belonged to his wife's father, Sir Richard Browne. It is now the feat of his great-great-grandfon, Sir Frederick Evelyn, bart.

The feat of David Barclay, Efq. near Wade's Mill, to the N. of Ware.
