Both these cows were bred at Kinnochtry, and were bought at Easter Tulloch in 1873. The family from Portlethen was started by the purchase of Miss Walker 2nd 2200, of the Kinnaird Fanny strain. Bulls have lately been used from Inchgarth, Brucehill, Baads, Keilyford, and Greystone.

The other, a bull, went to Barra Castle. The calves in the herd this year are after Knight of the Shire 1699. Last year a two-year-old heifer was sold to Mr Wilken, Waterside of Forbes, for exportation to America.

In October 1878 a fire occurred at the farm, and twenty-six valuable breeding cattle were destroyed. These comprised firstprize heifers at the Udny, Alford, and Garioch shows, and eight bull calves. Mr Bruce's greatest success in the showyard was gained in 1878, when he received the first prize and gold medal for cows at the Paris Exhibition, with Bella Mary 1503, of the Castle Fraser Blanche family. On leaving Wealthiton, Keig, in 1880, Mr. Bruce sold the few remaining polled cattle he had, four cows averaging £33, and five yearlings £23.
