north of Scotland, accompanied by Mr Robert Bruce, Great Smeaton, to see the principal herds. Being very greatly impressed with the remarkable family-likeness of the Ballindalloch Ericas, as well as with their beautiful heads and other good characteristics, he determined on forming a herd, and on getting as much of the Erica element as possible. He bought the only female of this family obtainable at Ballindalloch, but from the list appended it will be seen he has now in his possession thirteen females of this tribe. The lot form a pretty family group, and there are four particularly good ones,-viz. Eve 3355, Erica 6th 3023, Era 3833, and Easter 4540,-while the heifer calf from Ermin 3532, by the famous Pride bull Knight of the Shire 1699, may be mentioned as one of the most promising youngsters of the breed. The other Ericas are Elina 4361 and her heifer calf, Editha 1737, Elf 3751, Errantine 4546, Ermin 3532, with the heifer calves Esperanza, from Erica 6th, and Estella, from Easter. Of the Pride family, the herd boasts of two specimens, both very pretty and good. They are Khiva 4188, of the Ballindalloch Kindness branch of the strain, and a heifer calf from the Gavenwood matron, Lilias of Tillyfour 1795. Other three Ballindalloch families are represented in the herd in Jemima of Ballindalloch 4172, of the famous Jilt tribe; Nosegay 8th 3914, of the Nosegay tribe; and Frolic 4039, of the Lady Fanny tribe. One of the best show animals in the herd is Patroness 4561, from the celebrated Patience of Corskie 1932, by Proud Viscount 1264; while Heather Bell of Haughton 3rd 3953, from her great size and true outline, may be said to be one of the best of the cows. In Smyrna 4571 and her heifer calf, a well-known family is represented-viz. the Miss Watsons of Easter Skene. The cow Penuel 3755, bought from Mr William Robertson, is a very good specimen of the old Burnside blood; while Mary of Whiteside 3829, and her twin heifers, now two years old, represent an old Clova family. Hecuba 3rd 3637, bought for the

dairy, though not a high-bred one, has good blood in her veins. As stock bulls, Mr Wallis has secured two splendid animals a six-year-old and a yearling. The older bull is well known to all admirers of the breed. We refer to Challenger 1260, of the Pride tribe, whose portrait is given in vol. v. of the 'Herd Book.' The yearling named Sea King was bred at Ballindalloch from Sprite 3796, one of the best cows in Sir George Macpherson Grant's herd. Sea King has for sire the famous bull Justice 1462, while his dam's sire and grand-sire were the two champion bulls Judge 1150 and Juryman 404. From the material of which the herd is composed, containing, as it does, the very best blood obtainable, great things may be predicted of its future. Bradley Hall is beautifully situated on the banks of the Tyne, and its well sheltered pastures on a dry gravel subsoil ought to be a healthy, good home for the choice herd which has been gathered together at no little expense and trouble.

Ewell.-Mr John H. Bridges, yr. of Federate, has a few polled cattle at Ewell, Surrey. He bought two two-yearold heifers in 1878 from the late Mr Walker, Montbletton. Both were by Hampton 492, one being Mayflower 3rd 3411, and the other Duchess Marie 3410, and represented Mr Walker's celebrated Mayflower family. They had been first-prize winners as heifers at Turriff, and they carried respectively second and third prizes at the Royal show at Kilburn. The bull at present in use is Ebony 1261, own brother to Black Prince of Melville 1244, both bred by Mr Melville Cartwright of Melville. Prior to him, the bull used was Nicholas 1210, bred by the Earl of Fife. There are at Ewell four cows, a two-year-old heifer, two yearling heifers, and three bulls, besides a few steers. Mr Bridges finds the breed very hardy, and nothing seems to hurt them. He had some of his animals turned out on undrained meadows night and day last winter, with not even a shed to go into, and they always appeared to be well.

Felcourt.-Mr Carter Wood established a herd at Felcourt, East Grinsted, Sussex, in 1874, by the purchase of four animals from Mr Strachan, Wester Fowlis. There were: Beatrice 1954, by Draco 3rd 733; Isabella of Felcourt 2327, by the Highland Society's first-prize bull Palmerston 374; Elleana 2328, also by Palmerston; and Lady of Wester Fowlis 1955, by Draco 3rd. The produce of these cows have been retained and bred from, the sire used having been Lord Forbes 772, bred by Mr Walker, Westside.

Goodwood.-The Duke of Richmond and Gordon keeps a small herd at Goodwood, Sussex. It is mainly descended from stock obtained at the Westertown dispersion in 1874.

Horsted. This herd, belonging to Mr F. Barchard, Horsted, Uckfield, Sussex, was begun in 1880 by purchases at the joint sale held by Mr M'Combie of Easter Skene and Mr Hamilton of Skene. From the former was bought Isabella of Easter Skene 2585, of the Miss Watson family; Lady Langtry 3804; Margaret, by Paris 1473; and Scota, by Paris; and from the latter, Lady Love 2nd, by His Excellency 1271, dam Lady Love 3387; Vine 3rd of Skene, by His Excellency, dam Vine 2nd of Skene 3329; and the bull His Worship 2nd 1889. At Lord Strathmore and Lord Airlie's sale at Glamis, in the same year, Mr Barchard bought from Lord Airlie Elmira 4208, Jessica 5th 4206, and Guinevere 4211, all by Potentate 1199. These have bred well, and as far as Mr Barchard can at present judge, the climate of the south of England is not unfavourable to the polled breed.

Roos.-The Roos herd was founded in October 1875, Mr Dickinson at that time being allowed the selection of the Tilly four herd-four or five animals excepted. He chose Heather Bloom 1189, of the Rothiemay Victoria family, and her daughter Louisa of Tillyfour 1790, with the fine two-year-old heifer Lady Scott 1802, giving 100

guineas a-piece, then considered a high figure. At the same time he bought the first-rate old cow Naiad 978, of the Balwyllo Keepsake family. Mr M'Combie had acquired her at a sale of Sir George Macpherson Grant's, she being the highest-priced animal at the sale. Two or three others of lesser note were obtained at Tillyfour. A great milker, Mary of Kinnochtry 1770, was got from Mr Adamson, Balquharn, and a couple of cows from the Balquharn dispersion were added before Christmas of 1881. As stock bull, Mr Dickinson took from Tillyfour Blackleg 1350, bred at Easter Skene out of the well-known prize breeding cow Grizzle 995, and got by Moudiewart 686. Blackleg went to the butcher after a year's service, his place being taken by a promising yearling, Baron de Roos, out of Naiad, who was served when at Tillyfour by Altanour 641, being thus Tilly four bred. This yearling was assisted by another of the same age, named Burton, out of Heather Bloom, who was in calf, when sold, to Sir Garnet 684. A bull from Mains of Kelly followed, and in 1880 Chard, out of Heather Bloom, sire Baron de Roos, was used. In 1881 he was assisted by a yearling named Heather Lad, also out of Heather Bloom, and by the Mains of Kelly bull. In addition to the progeny of the cows named, the Roos herd contains many good non-pedigree animals, which have gradually taken the place of crossbreds and dairy Shorthorns. Mr Dickinson finds that certain strains of polls give fully the average quantity of milk, the quality being second only to that of the Jersey. The polls are hardier and are easier kept than the dairy Shorthorn or cross-bred. The bulls show their potency, nine-tenths of the calves from cross-bred cows coming black and hornless.

Smeaton Manor.-Major Godman, who is improving and beautifying his property, recently took one of his farms into his own hands, and being favourably impressed with the polled cattle exhibited at the Carlisle show of the
