WEST'S ANALYSIS OF THE BIBLE.

FOURTH THOUSAND-NOW READY.

COMPLETE ANALYSIS OF THE HOLY

BIBLE.

Containing the whole of the Old and New Testaments, collected and arranged systematically in Thirty Books (based on the work of the learned Talbot), together with an Introduction, setting forth the character of the work and the immense facility this method affords of understanding the word of God. Also, three different Tables of Contents prefixed, and a General Index subjoined, so elaborated, and arranged in alphabetical order, as to direct at once to any subject required. By Rev. Nathaniel West, D. D. 1 vol. royal 8vo. about 1,100 pages. Price $5.

The great superiority of this work will be readily seen, when it is borne in mind that it embraces the Old and New Testament entire, so arranged in the order of books, chapters and sections, that with the help of the Tables of Contents, which are very full, and of the Final Alphabetical Index, which is still more minute, the reader can at once, and in a very brief space of time ascertain "what the Word of God says in reference to any subject of Faith or Practice." This Analysis must, therefore, to a great extent, supersede the use of a Concordance. The subject once chosen, there is nothing to do but open the Analysis on the part required, and all the Bible says on each topic of that subject is there, and every topic is in the true succession of order and connection, following each other to the end of that subject, and all in full text. This obviates the perplexity of turning to the Concordance, and then to the Bible so frequently, in order to secure correctness, and prevent mistakes in making the reference necessary. No other work but a complete Analysis of the Bible can do this, as it respects every subject taught in the Book of God, and hitherto no such Analysis has appeared in this country.

A single glance at the Table of Contents and Index, exhibits at once the great value and availability of the work. In the arrangement, besides the Alphabetical Index, there are Thirty Books-two hundred and eighty-five chapters, and altogether four thousand one hundred and forty-four sections, and the whole so complete as to render every portion of the work-and thus of the whole Bible-perfectly at the command of the inquirer.

[blocks in formation]

"It wil be invaluable to the clergyman or the Sabbath School teacher, and full of interest and instruction to all who desire to master the contents of this blessed volume. The indexes are exceedingly full and accurate, and greatly enhance the value of the book."-N. Y. Evangelist.

"One of the most important works which has ever sppeared in illustration of the Holy Scriptures."-Literary World.

"This Analysis of the Holy Scriptures must very obviously be invaluable to all students and general readers of the Holy Bible."-N. Y. Churchman. "This very valuable volume is a work of immense labor and care. It is only necessary to look over the indexes of this large and important volume, and to become possessed of the plan and its execution on any one subject, to be convinced that the whole work is of great merit and value.”—N. Y. Independent.

PROFESSOR DAVIES'S BOURDON'S ALGEBRA.

BY

51 JOHN STREET, NEW YORK.

GENESEE COLLEGE, Dec. 30th, 1853.

I have carefully examined the Revised Edition of Davies's Bourdon's Algebra. In a happy adaptation to the wants of students, I deem it unequaled.

JAS. L. ALVERSON,
Professor of Pure and Mixed Math.

I have examined the same work and cheerfully offer for it a similar commendation.

WM. W. CLARK,
Genesee Wesleyan Seminary.

In the Revised Edition of Davies's Bourdon, just published, the author has, by the introduction of new methods of demonstration, and also of the elegant rules for the solution of numerical equations, grently improved upon the old editions.

For systematic arrangement, clearness, and conciseness in the statement of all the important principles, his Algebra, as a text-book, has, I think, no equal in this country. J. F. QUIMBY, Prof. of Mathematics and Nat. Philosophy University of Rochester. ROCHESTER, N. Y., Nov. 30th, 1853.

HAVE IN PRESS THE FOLLOWING HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK:

A NEW LATIN-ENGLISH DICTIONARY,

ON THE BASIS OF THE SCHOOL DICTIONARY OF

INGERSLEV,

WITH ADDITIONS FROM THE LEXICONS OF KOCH & KLOTZ.

BY GEORGE R. CROOKS, A. M., late of Dickinson College, and
ALEXANDER J. SCHEM, of the Universities of Bonn and Tuebingen.

The general plan of the work of INGERSLEV, from which the above Manual will be mainly derived, is as follows:

1. It embraces the words of the writers, of the golden and silver ages only, of Latin Classical Literature, whom Students usually read during and after their stay at School and College.

2. Particular attention is paid to the establishment of the fundamental meaning of each word, and the natural development and arrangement of the derived significations. The examples, which illustrate the significations, are given with brevity, and without the incumbrance of extra

neous matter.

3. The synonyms are treated with care, so as to make the use of a special work on that subject unnecessary.

INGERSLEV'S SCHOOL DICTIONARY

Has been received with unqualified approval, by many of the most distinguished Scholars, Editors, and Gymnasial Professors in Germany. A few of their commendatory notices are herewith appended. The want of such a repertory, containing neither too little nor too much, and presenting to the Classical Student precisely what he needs, and in the most available form, has been long felt in this country. It is believed that the proposed publication will meet the want precisely. An introduction will also be prefixed, containing suggestions as to the best mode of using a Lexicon. NOTICES OF INGERSLEV'S LEXICON, FROM EMINENT SCHOLARS OF GERMANY.

Dr. GARKE, Professor in the Gymnasium of Brunswick:

"The work reaches so high a degree of perfection, that without hesitation it may be referred to as a model. The author hits with great acuteness the fundamental meaning of each word, and develops plainly and clearly the derived significations. The book is considerably in advance of all similar works."

Dr. ECKSTEIN, Rector of the Latin High School, Halle:

"From a diligent perusal of the Dictionary of Ingerslev, I am convinced that it perfectly reaches its aim of satisfying the wants of scholars, and that it surpasses other works of the kind."

Dr. KRAFT, Director of the Johanneum of Hamburg, and author of the excellent large "German-Latin Dictionary :"

"My opinion is, that the Dictionary has been elaborated with praiseworthy diligence, after a well weighed plan, and on right principles, and is entirely sufficient for the wants of Schools."

From the "LITERARISCHES CENTRALBLATT," of Leipsic, Sept. 3d, 1853, edited by Dr. ZARNCKE, of the University of Leipsic:

"We thank the author that he has had the courage to tread a new path, to abandon that completeness which was aimed at in former Dictionaries, and to give a really complete one in another sense, i. e., a Dictionary which is entirely sufficient for the wants of Scholars in all classes, by explaining and by giving special attention to all those words which are found in the writers commonly used by Schools, and whose works are acknowledged as the most important for Students."

Similar commendations have been given by Directors of Gymnasia in Eisleben, Breslau, Naumberg, Berlin, Konigsberg, Emden, and others.

PUTNAM'S MONTHLY,

FOR FEBRUARY-NOW READY.

[blocks in formation]

"Full of good matter. Washington's Early Days, illustrated by three designs from the spirited and faithful pencil of Darley, opens the number. The article on Places of Public Amusement bears the marks of knowledge, taste, and reflection."-Courier.

"Last, but far from least, comes Putnam, the elegant Putnam, the original, the fresh, the daring Putnam, the organ of young and kid-gloved America. We consider it a point of patriotism to take Putnam; for this is the Magazine which is thrown down at London and Edinburgh like a gauntlet; take it up who dare! As Putnam comes to us on the first of the month, we take it up with the feeling of one who sees something roll to his feet which he hesitates to

examine; it may be a blessing-it may be a bombshell; he eyes it wistfully, and handles it with tremulous fingers. No one can be indifferent to Putnam's monthly coming; and this fact is the ground of his and our belief, that the Magazine will be a permanent and ever growing institution. It is not necessary to say, yet we do say it, that Putnam's is a good Magazine."-Home Journal.

"This American Magazine comes to us freighted with a store of mental wealth which we are confident has not been equalled by any serial on this side the great waters."-- Utica Herald.

"It is an American Magazine conducted with great ability, supported and enriched by the pens of many of the very best American writers, who enter the list with their masks on, but fully armed."-Plainfield Gazette.

"Many a book which sells for a dollar is not worth half so much as one number of this Magazine."-U. S. Journal.

"We regard it as having no superior among American Magazines. It is dignified, progressive and national in its character."-Newcastle Banner.

The Editors of this work will give in the preface a statement of the plan and purpose of their labors. The publishers may be permitted to add that their own part in the production of the volume has cost a very considerable amount of time, care, and money. Few, indeed, would have any adequate conception of the laborious details and large expense attending such a publication, especially as it is almost the first attempt of its kind in this country. The work was undertaken with the determination that it should be carried through impartially and independently;-that the best artists and engravers in the country should be employed on their own terms; that no partiality should be purchased by those whose works are criticised or illustratedthat the best accessible information and assistance should be obtained for the editorial department-that the whole work should be prepared with reference to its general and permanent value; the present Exhibition being merely a text, to illustrate general principles. This plan has been conscientiously adhered to. Without any aid or favor whatever from the government of the Exhibition, or from the Exhibitors themselves-access to the articles only exceptedthe undersigned have caused whatever was deemed worthy of illustration to be daguerreotyped, drawn, and engraved (excepting one or two trifling instances), solely at their own expense.

The whole cost of the volume thus produced exceeds FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. But the publishers have at least the satisfaction of knowing, that whatever degree of favor it may meet with, it has been prepared impartially, honestly, and without fear or favor; and that its criticisms cannot have any the less weight or value, from the fact that they have been beyond the influence of merely selfish considerations.

Of the 504 engravings on wood contained in this work (one hundred, by the way, costing about $3,000-more than our prospectus promised to subscribers), all but a few have been engraved in New York, and chiefly by American engravers. It could not be supposed that this art, any more than others, has yet had time to attain perfection in this country; but many of the specimens in our volume indicate a respectable progress, if, indeed, they suffer in comparison with those of the admirable work which was partly our model-the London Art Journal.

The whole volume furnishes information and examples which may be partially useful to a great variety of those theoretical practical_men-to sculptors, designers, and engravers-to manufacturers and machinists-silversmiths and metal founders-to ship-builders and cabinet-makers, and many others engaged in the various mechanical and artistic pursuits; while as a drawing-room table-book, it may also prove attractive and useful to families-suggestive as it is of the sources of information on the various branches of science and human industry, and of the principles of taste which should govern in the ornamental and useful arts. We are not aware that any other work of the kind can be mentioned which gives so much valuable information and expensive illustration, at so low a price. We confidently assert that when the expense of its production is considered, no similar book excels it in cheapness. We have aimed to place it within the reach of all classes. As already mentioned, we have presented the subscribers to this work with several pages-including one hundred engravings, over and above the number they were entitled to expect. Several other illustrations, for which we could not here find room, will be given in the Descriptive and Annotated Catalogue of the Exhibition.-Extract from the Publishers' Notice.
