Monday, January 6, 1840.

This being the day designated in the constitution of the state of Michigan for the assembling of the Legislature, the Senate met in their chamber at the capitol, at the city of Detroit, and the members present were called to order by Lieutenant Governor Edward Mundy.

Samuel Yorke At Lee took the Secretary's seat, and the roll being called, there were present, Senators Etheridge, Gidley, Greenly, Hawkins, Summers and Trowbridge.

Absent, Senator McCamly.

On motion of Mr. Hawkins, the names of the Senators elect were then called by districts.

Whereupon, the following Senators appeared, and having subscribed the constitutional oath of office, administered by Chas. W. Whipple, presiding judge of the fourth circuit, duly took their seats, to wit:

First district-De Garmo Jones, Benjamin F. H. Witherell. Second district-John J. Adam, Seba Murphy.

Third district-Thomas J. Drake, John P. LeRoy.

Fourth district-Justin Rice.

Fifth district-James M. Edmunds.

Sixth district-Henry P. Bridge.

Seventh district-Elijah Lacey.

On motion of Senator Gidley,

The rules for the government of the Senate at the last session, were temporarily adopted.
