JOURNAL OF THE SENATE.

At a General Assembly of the State of Illinois, begun and held in the city of Springfield, on Monday, the 2nd day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-five, being the first session of the twenty-fourth General Assembly,

The Hon. Francis A. Hoffman, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Illinois and Speaker of the Senate, appeared at 12 o'clock, M., took the chair and called the Senate to order.

Prayer was then offered to the Throne of Grace by the Rev. Mr. Miner.

On motion of Mr. Addams of Stephenson,

John F. Nash of LaSalle county was appointed Secretary pro tem., and C. P. Ford of DeWitt was appointed Sergeant-at-arms pro tem. On motion of Mr. Addams of Stephenson,

The Secretary was instructed to call the roll of members holding over; which he did, and the following gentlemen answered to their names and took their seats:

Messrs. Addams of Stephenson, Allen of Kane, Green of Alexander, Lansing of McHenry, Lindsay of Peoria, Peters of Vermilion, Richards of Whiteside, Schofield of Hancock, Vandeveer of Christian, Ward of Cook, and Worcester of Greene.

On motion of Mr. Ward,

The Secretary was then instructed to call the list of members elect; which he did, and the following gentlemen answered to their names, and by request of the chairman, came forward, presented their certiticates, took the oath prescribed by the constitution of Illinois, and took their seats:

Messrs. Bushnell of LaSalle, Eastman of Cook, Funk of McLean, Green of Marion, Hunter of Edgar, Mack of Kankakee, McConnell of Morgan, Metcalf of Madison, Reily of Randolph, Strain of Warren, Webster of Rock Island, and Wescott of Clay.

On motion of Mr. Mack,

The roll of members was now called, and the following gentlemen answered:

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Alexander, Green of Marion, Hunter, Lansing, Lindsay, Mack, McConnell, Metcalf, Peters, Reily, Richards, Schofield, Strain, Ward, Webster, Wescott, Worcester.

On motion of Mr. Addams,

Further proceedings under the call were dispensed with.
On motion of Mr. Addams,

The Senate proceeded to elect permanent officers of the Senate.
Mr. Bushnell put in nomination the name of John F. Nash of La-
Salle county as Secretary of the Senate.

Mr. Green of Alexander put in nomination the name of Manning Mayfield of Macoupin county for the same office.

And the vote being taken, resulted as follows:

Those voting for John F. Nash are,

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Marion, Lansing, Mack, Metcalf, Peters, Richards, Strain, Ward, Webster. Those voting for Manning Mayfield are,

Messrs. Green of Alexander, Hunter, Lindsay, McConnell, Reily, Schofield, Wescott, Worcester.

The Speaker then announced that Mr. Nash, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected.

Mr. Ward put in nomination the name of George H. Harlow of Tazewell county for first assistant Secretary of the Senate.

Mr. Lindsay put in nomination the name of William Rounsville of Peoria county for the same office.

And the vote being taken, resulted as follows:

Those voting for George H. Harlow are,

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Marion, Lansing, Mack, Metcalf, Peters, Richards, Strain, Vandeveer, Ward, Webster.

Those voting for William Rounsville are,

Messrs. Green of Alexander, Hunter, Lindsay, McConnell, Reily, Schofield, Wescott, Worcester.

The Speaker then announced that Mr. Harlow, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected.

Mr. Allen put in nomination the name of Thomas C. Moore of Kane county for second Assistant Secretary of the Senate.

Mr. Green of Alexander put in nomination the name of Alexander H. Irving of .... county.

And the vote being taken, resulted as follows:

Those voting for Thomas C. Moore are,

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Marion, Lansing, Mack, Metcalf, Peters, Richards, Strain, Ward, Webster. Those voting for Alexander H. Irving are,

Messrs. Green of Alexander, Hunter, Lindsay, McConnell, Reily, Schofield, Wescott, Worcester.

The Speaker then announced that Thomas C. Moore, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected.

Mr. Mack put in nomination the name of James Dowling for third assistant Secretary of the Senate.

And the vote being taken, resulted as follows:

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Marion, Lansing, Mack, Metcalf, Peters, Richards, Strain, Ward, Webster.

The Speaker then announced that James Dowling, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected.

Mr. Addams put in nomination the name of John R. Howlett for engrossing and enrolling Clerk.

Mr. Lindsay put in nomination the name of Edward Dunham for the same office.

And the vote being taken, resulted as follows:

Those voting for John R. Howlett are,

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Marion, Lansing, Mack, Metcalf, Peters, Richards, Strain, Ward, Webster. Those voting for Edward Dunham are,

Messrs. Green of Alexander, Hunter, Lindsay, McConnell, Reily, Schofield, Wescott, Worcester.

Mr. Peters put in nomination the name of John H. Cacy for first assistant engrossing and enrolling Clerk.

Mr. Green of Alexander put in nomination the name of J. T. Pratt for the same office.

And the vote being taken, resulted as follows:

Those voting for John H. Cacy are,

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Bushnell, Eastman, Funk, Green of Marion, Lansing, Mack, Metcalf, Peters, Richards, Strain, Ward, Webster. Those voting for J. T. Pratt are,

The Speaker then announced that John H. Cacy, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected.

Mr. Metcalf put in nomination the name of David H. Porter for second assistant engrossing and enrolling clerk.
