PREFACE TO THIRD EDITION IN preparing this edition I have corrected many small errors pointed out by my various correspondents, and have also added a considerable amount of new matter embodying important researches which have been made during the last twelve years, and which serve to throw light on many obscure or disputed questions. In order to avoid the inconvenience of altering the pagination of the greater portion of the volume and thus rendering it difficult to find passages which have been referred to by their pages in the first edition, most of the new matter is added in the form of Appendices to Chapters V, VIII, X, XII, and XIV, and the additional pages have been lettered instead of being consecutively numbered. I have to thank my various correspondents for the notes and corrections they have so kindly sent me. Most of them are referred to by name in the text; but I have especially to thank Mr. Th. D. A. Cockerell and Mr. E. B.
