THE BRAZEN SERPENT.

THIS is a very interesting portion in the history of the Old Testament, relating one of those numerous occurrences in the Israelitish church, which were typical of events that should happen in the Gospel day.

The children of Israel were a most selfish, ungrateful, rebellious people; and their hearts, being intent on their own selfishness, were naturally and necessarily set against God. This is one of the fundamental maxims of our holy religion; this the sure indubitable sign of all the true servants of God-"No man liveth unto himself." Not so these faithless people. When, indeed, they felt the terrors of the Lord, when smarting under His chastising rod, they cried unto Him in their distress; but as soon as He had mercy on them, and sent a gracious
