IN no collection published can all the selections be of use to any individual, and the teacher or reader who wishes to secure a variety of selections adapted to his own special requirements, must necessarily have nearly as many books as he has selections. To obviate this necessity, to give all an opportunity of compiling for themselves, and to make it possible to place printed selections in the hands of the pupils in our schools, at a small expense, is the object of these Leaflets. Having experienced some of the difficulties a teacher has in obtaining good selections for pupils, I know the practical assistance these may be. For the benefit of teachers, I have selected only from those authors whose works may be introduced in our schools. The quotations may be used for class-drill or be given by pupils at the morning exercises. The Leaflets are bound together for the use of teachers, and while I know there are already many good collections, I trust this may meet the wants of some of our readers and elocutionists. I know that every selection is pleasing to an audience. Thanks are due to the publishers who have generously permitted me to make selections from various American copyrighted works, and also to Mr. Will Carleton, for his courtesy in allowing me to copy from "Farm Ballads," and to the Rev.
