THIS little book is based upon notes used, and work done, by the author, in the schoolroom with the several grades for which it is designed.

It is believed to be practical and logical. The purpose has been to make the statements clear, concise, and just as they would be told outside of a schoolroom, divorced from all the mystified atmosphere of something foreign to real life.

There seems to be a demand from teachers, parents, and pupils for something more explicit upon the different principles of arithmetic than is given in the State text-book. This demand, coupled with the author's own experience and success in the line of work herein suggested, together with the expressed desire of some of his co-laborers, induced him to put his notes into book form for the use of both pupils and teachers.

It is hoped that the work will meet with favor, and that some of the seemingly difficult things may be made easier by its use.
