This sumptuous volume is a brilliant exhibition of every grade of life and society in France, from 1700 to 1789. The work is illustrated with twenty-one full-page CHROMO-LÍTHOGRAPHS richly colored, and 350 BEAUTIFUL ENGRAVINGS ON WOOD. By JOHN G. WHITTIER. Illustrated with numerous designs by Miss M. A. Hallock and Mr. Thomas Moran. Engraved by Mr. A. V. S. Anthony. Svo, in beautifully ornamented cover, and full gilt, $5; morocco, $10.

This book has been prepared with great care for the holiday season. The poem is in Mr. Whittier's most characteristic and popular vein. It is a story containing a very touching appeal for charity and human sympathy; a most eloquent protest against passion, prejudice, and bigotry. It relates to the time of the Witchcraft delusion, and abounds in noble and beautiful sentiments, such as Mr. Whittier has often charmed us with. The illustrations are by the same artists that made "The Hanging of the Crane," last Holiday season, so beautiful, and are of the same high order of excellence.

LONGFELLOW'S NEW BOOK.

The Masque of Pandora, And other Poems. I vol., 16mo, $1.50.

This book contains "The Masque of Pandora," a new dramatic poem ; "Morituri Salutamus," the famous SemiCentennial Class poem, recited at Bowdoin College last July; "The Hanging of the Crane," which in its illustrated form was so popular last year; "Birds of Passage; and a "Book of Sonnets." No previous volume by Mr. Longfellow is richer in the beauty of fancy, the grace of thought, and the felicity of utterance for which he is admired wherever the English language is known.

BRET HARTE'S NEW BOOK.

Tales of the Argonauts, And other Sketches. I vol., 16mo, $1.50.

Eight stories and sketches of California and pioneer life, of the same general character and marked by the same unique genius as "The Luck of Roaring Camp," and other stories which have won Bret Harte a world-wide fame.

Adventures of Captain Hatteras. By JULES VErne. 12m0, 250 illustrations, $3.

One of Verne's earliest and best stories. It abounds in emarkable discoveries, hazardous adventures, ingenious applications of scientific knowledge, and wonderful achievements -all told in the most engaging manner, and very fully illustrated.

NOTES IN SEASON.

THE new novel by E. Werner, "A Hero of the Pen," just ready at Wm. F. Gill & Co.'s, is laid at the time of the French-German war, and a part of its plot is worked out in America. It is said to be very dramatic.

JAS. H. COATES & Co. will issue the first volume of the authorized translation of Comte de Paris' History of the Civil War in America," the first two French volumes in one, November 12th. The author has written a prefatory letter to his American publishers, giving to this translation exclusive copyright in England and authorization in America, and expressing the kindliest sentiments toward our people. The book has received a high compliment from Gen. Sherman.

Two rival holiday books from Boston are making their appearance in the market-Whittier's "Mabel Martin," from Osgood, and Jean Ingelow's "Shepherd Lady," from Roberts. They are both exquisite books, of which we shall have more to say hereafter, and as there is not a great variety of fresh holiday literature, both will have the better chance. The fact that the illustrators and engravers of the popular Hanging of the Crane" illustrate the Osgood book, will give it an especially good start.

"FARM LEGENDS" is nearly ready at the Harpers, in a handsome volume, in like style with Farm Ballads," of which something like 50,000 copies have been sold. Carleton's popularity has indeed been wonderful. The new volume is illustrated with very strong work by Abbey and Reinhart.

AN important announcement is made by G. P. Putnam's Sons, of a new series, to be known MR. The volumes will

be issued in neat cabinet size, similar to "German Classics," and will be edited by Mr. John Habberton.

“WHITTAKER'S Reference Catalogue of Current Literature," 1875-6, is now out in England, and we trust to receive immediately the edition for this country. The index this year extends to 104 pages, and includes the short reference titles of more than 17,000 works or collections. The number sent over for this country is limited, and it is probable that no more can be had. Subscriptions, $2.50 each,

should be sent in immediately to insure copies. Publishers' Board of Trade.

THE fine work on Monumental Christianity," by Rev. J. P. Lundy, may be expected from J. W. Bouton's about the fifteenth of November. This volume will be of rare interest to the general reader, as well as a valuable contribution to theological literature, in which its bearings are said to be toward the Baptist and High Church Episcopalian views. The book is a treatise on "The Art and Symbolism of the Primitive Church, as Witnesses and Teachers of the one Catholic Faith and Practice," and is

based on the inscriptions and devices of the catacombs and other early monuments. There will be 200 cuts in with the text, besides many folding plates; the work will make a small quarto, at $7.50.
