The First Attempt at a Full and Connected Military History of the Whole War."

WILL ISSUE NOVEMBER 12.

HISTORY

OF THE

CIVIL WAR IN AMERICA,

BY THE COMTE DE PARIS.

Translated with the approval of the author, by LOUIS F. TASISTRO. Edited by HENRY COPPÉE, LL.D.

VOLUME I.

(Embracing the first two volumes of the French edition.)

8vo, cloth, $3.50; sheep, library style, $4.50; half Turkey morocco, $6.

From the ATHENÆUM, London, England.

(In a review of the first two French volumes.)

In this, the first part of his great work on the American
War, the head of the Orleans family has put pen to paper with
excellent result.
Our present impression is that
it will form by far the best history of the American War.
From the SATURDAY REVIEW, London, England.
(In a review of the first two French volumes.)
He describes the contending forces with the power of a mili-
tary critic who adds practical knowledge of the subject of
which he treats to a theorist's breadth of view.
The

passage of the count's work already quoted, proves sufficient-
ly the keenness of his observation; but the strength of this
volume, as before noted, lies, above all, in his just appreciation
of the historic causes out of which grew the peculiarities of
the American armies. It is difficult, within our limits, to do
justice to his treatment of this hitherto virgin subject. This
is but one of many examples of the research and knowledge of
the author, of whose introductory chapters we can but repeat
that, though intended in the first place for French readers,
they offer such a contribution to the study of American mili-
tary history as soldiers of every country, and Americans them-
selves above all, have reason to be sincerely grateful for.
Of its merits as a military history we have already said much,
and few readers will be found to dispute them.

From THE NATION, New-York.

In a review of the first two French volumes.) We must not, on account of the author's short service as an aid-de-camp on General McClellan's staff, prejudge this book to be an account of his personal services and a plea for General McClellan. Such is far from being the case. He writes of the entire war, east and west, after years of study on all its de❘ tails and from every authority available: and General McClel, lan early comes in for sharp censure for his inaction in October

1861, when "he lost the best opportunity he ever had for com-
mencing a successful and decisive campaign."... In the
first volume the only action described of any consequence is
the battle of Bull Run; but this volume is, perhaps, the most
valuable of all, inasmuch as it contains an elaborate criticism
of our system of a small regular army supplemented in time of
need by immense numbers of volunteers, and this criticism is
from one accustomed all his life to, and thoroughly familiar
with, the organization and methods of European armies. He
quickly seizes upon the salient military features of the war,
which we conceive to be, first, the importance of the railroads,
this being the first great war in which they were employed;
and, second, the effect of the nature of the country fought
over upon the grand tactics necessarily employed... With
the account of this last momentous engagement-the first in
the world's history between armored ships-the second vol
ume closes.
If those which are to succeed it are composed in
the same clear and comprehensive manner, we shall undoubt-
edly have the best history yet written of the military opera-

tions of the war.

Far above all these-(Pollard's, General Johnston's, Swinton's, Badeau's, De Trobriand's, Headley's, Greeley's, Draper's, Col. Fletcher's, Col. Hamley's, Col. Chesney's)— in pretension and so far in accomplishment, stands the work of the Count of Paris, the first attempt at a full and connected military history of the whole war.

From the CHRISTIAN UNION, New-York.

As important as any of the books promised, is the "History of the Civil War in America," by the Count of Paris. Our war has been treated by historians principally with regard to its political causes and effects. The Count of Paris, while not lacking in political experience, is a soldier by education and training, and has also, by nature, an inclination to regard military affairs for their own sake alone. The opening chapters of this history, which have already been published in France, have elicited high praise from veteran European soldiers, and from many Americans.

NOTES IN SEASON.

THE new library edition of Taine's works has given this author a new hold on the market. Henry Holt & Co. have nearly ready his admirable little volume on the " Philosophy of Art in Italy," which will be published in two editions -one a tasteful 16mo volume, uniform with the author's similar works on Greece and the Ne

therlands; the other to be included with the latter two works in a single volume, in the new uniform edition. They will also publish shortly a fifth volume of John Stuart Mill's "Dissertations and Discussions," which will contain all of the author's shorter papers not previously collected. These two sets of Taine and Mill are both very handsome, and should find a place in every library.

THE Appletons propose to put their social science books into a uniform style of bindinga large 12mo, in maroon cloth, handsomely but neatly stamped, to retail as a rule at $2 per volume. They already have ready in this shape, Mill's Political Economy, 2 vols., and Buckle's History of Civilization, 2 vols.-both making very cheap editions of these exceedingly important works, the foremost of their kind. The works of Herbert Spencer will be issued in the same shape. They are also pushing forward the issue of their new Library Edition of Cooper,

much abridged in Scribner's Monthly. There is also a new story-book, "Tales out of School," by clever Mr. Stockton, uniform with "Roundabout Rambles," of which a new edition is also ready. Here are picture-books a-plenty !

ROBERTS BROs. have a long and strong list of books for immediate publication, as advertised on another page. "The Shepherd Lady" will undoubtedly be one of the most popular holiday books of the year, for Miss Ingelow is a great favorite in America, and many of our popular artists. Darley, Miss Hallock, Eytinge, etc., as well as Arthur Hughes, from the other side, have had a hand in the illustrations. The three Hamerton books are also very notable, particularly the new edition of 'Etching and Etchers," and that long-promised book of beauty," The Sylvan Year.'

66

G. W. CARLETON & Co. have a sensation in store-Miss Bessie Turner's story of "A Woman in the Case." It will have a photograph of "Bessie," whose reputation is co-extensive with the knowledge of the Beecher trial

and we believe most people read that up. There will also be a new novel by Julie P. Smith, who always writes brightly, and Mrs. Nannie Emerson, the other author of "Betsey and I are out," will publish a volume of "Little Folks' Letters," with poems for children, etc., also with photographic portrait.

"

DR. RIDGAWAY'S volume on "The Lord's Land is nearly ready at Nelson & Phillips'. It is a narrative of actual travel from Egypt all through Moab and Palestine, and contains also

a résumé of the discoveries of such late ex

plorers as Palmer, Tristram, Warren, Conder,

and others. There will be more than a hundred superior wood-cuts, by Woodward, Gibson, Warren, G. Perkins, Felter, and T. Moran.

American in Iceland," is to be published this PROF. KNEELAND'S pleasant book, "An month by Lockwood, Brooks & Co., in handsome shape, with map and many illustrations. The chapters were first given as lectures at the Lowell Institute, Boston, and entertained large audiences, and the book's popularity has the refore been tested in advance. The lectures are re-written, graphically, and there is much new matter. There will also be a holiday book from this house, "Silhouettes of the Season, in Art and Song" the illustrations, twelve in number, are by a child of fourteen, and are said to be very charming, and each is accompanied by an original poem from a popular author.

in binding, and has a margin of such amplitude as to make it virtually a large paper edition.

THAT royal work on "India," by Louis Rousselet, is published to-day by Scribner, Armstrong & Co. It is a superb $25 volume, superroyal quarto, of most interesting text, and with a half dozen maps and over three hundred illustrations, in the highest style of French woodengraving. Many copies of this work were ordered by the Prince of Wales for distribution as presents during his journey in India. Lovers of the marvellous may also begin to read Jules Verne's " Mysterious Island," of which the first volume, "Dropped from the Clouds," is also ready, to be followed soon by the other two. The illustrations are very fine. This is the first full publication of the story, for it has been
