In accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the state of Illinois, the twentieth General Assembly of said state convened, in their first session, at the state house, in the city of Springfield, on Monday, the fifth day of January, A. D. 1857.

On motion of Mr. Preston,

The House was called to order, and

On motion of Mr. Logan,

Hon. John Dougherty, of Union county, was appointed chairman, pro tem. On motion of Mr. Logan,

J. L. McConnel, of Morgan county, was chosen clerk, pro tem., and W. D. Latshaw, of Edgar, assistant clerk, pro tem.

On motion of Mr Sparks,

Tevis Greathouse, of Fayette, was appointed sergeant-at-arms, pro tem.
On motion of Mr. Logan,

Samuel Hunt, of Morgan, J. W. Singleton, of Adams, and Cloyd Crouch, were pointed assistant sergeants-at-arms.

On motion of Mr. Roman, it was

Resolved, That the House now proceed to call the roll, alphabetically, and to receive certificates of election from such members as may appear to be in attendance.

Whereupon, the following members appeared and answered to their names, and were qualified by Hon. Edwin Beecher, one of the circuit judges of the state of Illinois, and took their seats, viz:

On motion of Mr. Moulton,

The House adjourned until three o'clock, P. M.

House met, pursuant to adjournment.

On motion of Mr. Sloan,

The roll of the members was called, when Messrs. Hitt, of Morgan and Scott, Eustace, of Lee and Whiteside, Little, of Mercer, Henry and Rock Island counties, and Mr. Mason, of Madison, came forward, and the oath of office being administered by Hon. O. C. Skinner, one of the justices of the supreme court, they respectively took their seats.

Mr. Denio produced the certificate of the secretary of state, of the following effect: that in the representative district, composed of the counties of Peoria and Stark, the following named persons received the number of votes set opposite their respective names, for representatives to the General Assembly: William S. Moss, 2933; Martin Shallenberger, 3067; Calvin L. Eastman, 2796; Calvin M. Eastman, 280.

Also, the following resolution:

That all persons having a plurality of the legal votes of their representative districts should participate in the permanent organization of this House, and inasmuch as the seat of the member representing the counties of Peoria and Stark is contested, this House will not permanently organize until that case is decided.

Which was decided not to be in order by the Chair.

On motion of Mr. Sloan,

The House proceeded to the election of a Speaker, viva voce.

The Chair announced that nominations would be in order,

Whereupon, Mr. Sloan placed the name of Samuel Holmes, of Adams, in nomination.

Mr. Denio placed Isaac N. Arnold, of Cook, in nomination.
Mr. Whiting placed S. M. Cullom in nomination.

Whereupon, the clerk proceeded to call the roll; which resulted as follows:
Those who voted for Mr Holmes are,

Messrs. Anderson, Bane, Burke, Burns, Casey, Christy, Connelly, Dougherty, Dyckes, Epler, Erwin, Gorin, Goudy, Gregory, Grimes, Hire, Hitt, Huitt, Ingersoll, Jones, Kerley, Logan, Morrison, Moulton, Ozburn, Preston, Roman, Shallenberger, Sloan, Sparks, Tyner, Watt, Wilkins, Willard, Wilson and Wyche-36.

Those who voted for Mr. Arnold are,

Messrs. Baldwin, Blades, Boal, Burbank, Church, Crothers, Davis of Stephenson, Davis of Vermilion, Denio, Dunham, Eustace, Frisbie, Gilbert, Jarrott, Kelsey, Lathrop, Lawrence, Little, Morgan, Morris, Mueller, Parker, Pinckney, Radcliffe, Reading, Smith, Wheeler, Wickizer-28.

Those voting for Mr. Cullom, are,

Messrs. Whiting, Megredy, Mason and Ricks-4.
Mr. Arnold voted for Mr. Denio-1.

Mr. Cullom voted for Mr. Whiting-1.

Whereupon, the Chair announced that Mr. Holmes, having received a majority of all the votes cast, declared him duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives.

On motion of Mr. Moulton,

The Chair appointed a committee of three, consisting of Messrs. Moulton, Logan and Sloan, to wait upon the Speaker elect and conduct him to the chair; which duly being performed,

Mr. Holmes addressed the House, as follows:
