PREFACE.

We trust that the volume we now present to our readers will by no means be found deficient in these sources of interest which have ensured its predecessors so great a degree of success, and that our desire to render it more and more worthy the attention of the public has been made sufficiently evident.

Our endeavour has been, by the introduction of a variety of literary matter, to interest many classes in our magazine. Such as seek for serious reading may find it; while we trust we have sufficiently interspersed light articles and stories to prevent the least appearance of dulness in our pages.

Long-established prejudices may perhaps rebel against the view taken of the life and opinions of a man hitherto held in abhorrence. But while we do not profess ourselves answerable for all the opinions of our contributors, we may yet remark that, in cases like that of Robespierre, the absence of investigation into motives of conduct may have caused men to pourtray him in blacker colours than even he appeared. The writer of the papers here alluded to has used every means of making himself perfectly acquainted with the facts, living on the same scene of action, and
