AGREEABLY to the provisions of the Constitution, the Senate of the State of Vermont convened at the State House in Montpelier, on the second Thursday, being the ninth day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-five. At ten o'clock A. M. the Senate was ealled to order, in the absence of the Lieutenant Governor, by D. W. C. Clarke, the. Secretary, when the roll was called, and the following Senators answered to their names: BLACKMAN E. BROWNELL, ASAHEL HURD. BENNINGTON COUNTY, JOHN CAMPBELL, The oath of office was thereupon administered to the Senators present, by the Secretary. The Senate then proceeded to ballot for a President pro tempore. Mr. Noyes and Mr. Sabin were appointed tellers, and the ballots having been taken and counted, the HON. JAMES BARRETT, a Senator from Windsor County, was found to have been elected, and the oath of office was administered by the Secretary, and he took the Chair. On motion of Mr. Woodbridge, it was Ordered, That the rules of the Senate of last session be adopted as the rules of the present session, until otherwise ordered. On the nomination of the President pro tempore, the following Senators were appointed the Committee on the part of the Senate, to canvass the votes for Govenor, Lieutenant Governor, and Treasurer, for the year ensuing : Messrs. Howe of Windham County, Hurd of Bennington County, And they were sworn. Mr. Morgan introduced the following resolution, which was read and passed: Resolved, by the Senate and House of Representatives, That the two Houses meet in Joint Assembly at three o'clock this afternoon, to hear the report of the Canvassing Committee. On motion of Mr. Hodges, it was Ordered, That the Secretary inform the House of Representatives that the Senate have met, and organized by the election of the HoN. JAMES BARRETT, their President pro tempore, and are ready to proceed to business. On motion of Mr. T. T. Barrett, it was Ordered, That the Senate do now proceed to the election of a Secretary and Assistant Secretary for the year ensuing. Whereupon, The ballots having been taken, it was found that D. W. C. CLARKE was elected Secretary of the Senate; and the oath of office was administered to him by the President pro tempore; and that FREDERICK BILLINGS was elected Assistant Secretary; and the oath of office was thereupon administered to him by the Secretary. |
