INTRODUCTION.

THE PANTON MANUSCRIPTS are mostly in the hand-writing Panton Mss. of the Rev. Evan Evans, M.A., of Merton College, a good scholar who devoted himself to literature and the Muses. We are told that he "spat blood excessively,” that he " drank more than his share," that he “would do wonders if he was independent in the world .. .. has done wonders as he is ... O Bishops, o princes, o ye fat men of the land why suffer ye that man to starve."* It cannot be denied that Evan Evans shared the enthusiasm of George Borrow for cwrw da, but so did the great majority of his brethren who obtained promotion, The fact that he, the ablest Welsh churchman of his time, lived and died a curate was principally due to the endeavour of the Anglo-Welsh bishops to stamp out the vernacular, a policy which alienated the people and emptied the churches. Every place which had a decent emolument was given to those who could not address the parishioners in their own tongue, who indeed were content not to address them in any tongue. We obtain a vivid glimpse of the ecclesiastical polity of the eighteenth century in Panton MS. 41. Those who are interested in the subject may read the passages extracted below. And as to the aim and nature of the services of Evans to Welsh literature, his own words in the following epistle-dedicatory may serve us :To Sir Roger Mostyn of Mostyn and Gloddaith ... Worthy Evan Evans's

I have gathered together the History of Britain and Wales from the oldest copies now extant of Brut y Brenhinoedd & Brut y Tywyssogion, Trioedd ynys Prydain, yr amseroedd hynod o oes Gwrtheyrn Gwrthenau hyd amser Llywelyn ap forwerth, Achau Saint
