LORD Jefu Chrift, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the fins of the world, have mercy upon us.

O Thou wonder of angels, yet fcorn of men; guiltless, yet laden with our guilt: rich, but poor for our fakes: have mercy, have mercy upon us.

Thou that haft bowed down and suffered fo long for us; for all Thy fufferings and for all Thy mercies, have pity upon us.

By Thy life of perfecution, pity us ftill.

By Thy hunger, feed us. By Thy temptation, fuccour us in our trials.

By Thy homeless wanderings;

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trefpaffes, As we forgive them that trespass And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

As crucified, forfaken, dy- against us. ing, and yet alive :

O let us look on Thee, think on Thee, believe on Thee, and live.

Let no darkness hide Thee from our eyes. Those wounds are ours, thofe fins are ours, that death is due to us; on Thee is laid the iniquity of us all.

O crucify our fins also, our finful habits, and ftill more finful defires.

Let them die with Thee; let us die with Thee before

Let us pray.

LORD Jefus Chrift, the hope and refuge of finners, interpofe, we implore Thee, Thy Crofs and Paffion between Thy sentence and our fouls, both now, at the hour of death, and in the day of judgment. O let not Thy precious blood be shed for us in vain; but by Thy Body which was crucified, crucify

all that is finful in us; and in Thy facred wounds, hide us from wrath; and as upon the Crofs Thou didst pray for Thine enemies, even fo now, O good Jefu, pray for us, plead for us, who have fo often pierced Thee with our fins, that the merits of Thy bleffed Paffion may be applied to our fouls, for the remiffion of all their guilt, and the remittance of all their pains, both here and hereafter. Grant this, O merciful Saviour, for Thine own sweet compaffion's fake. Amen.

fake, that Thou wouldeft grant to us, our friends, and benefactors, and to all thofe for whom we intend or are bound to pray, the pardon of all paft offences, and prefervation from all future failings; that loving Thee, ferving Thee, and obeying Thee with the utmoft fervour, fidelity, and perfeverance unto the end, we may at length be admitted to the eternal enjoyment of Thy Bleffed Kingdom, where Thy Saints ever follow Thee, praising and glorifying Thee as the Lamb who waft flain for the fins of the world, and haft redeemed them unto the Father for ever and ever. A DEVOUT

LITANY FOR A HAPPY DEATH.

[ocr errors]

LORD Jefu, God of

all comfort and Father of all mercies, I approach Thee with a contrite and humble heart: to Thee I would commend the last hour of my life, and the decifion of my eternal doom.

When my feet benumbed with death fhall tell me that my mortal life is drawing to a close;

Merciful Jefu, have mercy

on me.

When my eyes, dim and troubled at the approach of death, fhall fix themselves on Thee my laft and only stay;

Merciful Jefu, have mercy

on me.

When my face, now pale

and ghaftly, fhall infpire all who fee me with pity and dismay : when my hair, bathed in the fweat of death, fhall forebode my approaching end;

Merciful Jefu, have mercy

on me.

When my mind shall be loft in anguish, and agitated perhaps with dreadful horrors: When my foul, difmayed at the fight of my guiltiness, and the terrors of Thy judgment shall hold conflict with the angel of darknefs: When he fhall hover round me to hide Thee from mine eyes and plunge me into his own despair ;

Merciful Jefu, have mercy

on me.
