Introduction to the Third Edition.

HIS MANUAL was drawn up by me fome twenty years ago more especially for the use of the London Diocefan Penitentiary, which I was then founding at Highgate, and it received at the time the fanction of Bishop Blomfield. But as I remarked in the First Introduction, "the prayers, pfalms, hymns, as well as the occafional litanies, have been selected, not only for the ufe of penitents, as fuch in a House of Mercy, but for all who either as a body or individuals have been led by God's grace to feel the burden of fin.” I have accordingly without changing the matter changed the Title of the book, fo as to adapt it to general miffion work, and especially that conducted by Brothers of the English Order of St. Auguftine.

This book having been stereotyped, I am enabled to present it almost as a free gift to the people, and I pray HIM who fought the finner "thus wearied " when on earth, and chose St. Paul, the chief of finners, ftill unwearied from out of Heaven, to blefs this humble effort to win fouls for whom He died.
