PREFACE.

Ir has been a matter of regret with those most interested in the progress of historical studies among us, that the series of Collections have not been more regularly published, and especially that so long an interval has been suffered to elapse since the issue of the first volume of the new series. The success which has attended the endeavors to infuse new life and spirit into the action of the Society, and to enlarge the sphere of its influence and usefulness, has seemed to reprove the delay in the discharge of this important branch of its duties. In order, therefore, to secure the publication of such materials as are otherwise not well preserved, or easily accessible to the public, the Society, at its meeting in June, 1847, ordered that the Executive Committee be directed, thereafter, before the meeting of the Society in January of each year, to cause to be prepared and published at least one part or number, of which two should form a volume, of Collections of the Society, to be similar in style to the first volume of the new series, and to be in continuation of the same, to consist of original contributions, or selected matter, as they may see fit. To this end they were authorized to call in the assistance of other members, and to make such arrangements for printing and publishing as
