Frugality is the daughter of Prudence, the sister of Temperance, and the parent of Liberty.

Nothing is more unjust than to judge of man on too short an acquaintance, or too slight inspection.

The duties of life are commensurate to its duration; and every day brings its task, which, if neglected, is doubled on the morrow.

'If Virtue could be seen,' said Tully, 'she must be loved;' and we may add, that if Truth could be heard, she must be obeyed.

He who never was acquainted with adversity has seen the world but on one side, and is ignorant of half the scenes of nature.

A man would have but few spectators, if he offered to show for threepence, how he could thrust a red-hot iron into a barrel of gunCpowder, and it should not take fire.

When I am reading a book, whether wise or silly, it seems to me to be alive and talking

to me.

When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are in confederacy against him.

A good word is as soon said as a bad one.

If a man would register all his opinions upon love, politics, religion, learning, &c. beginning from his youth, and so go on to old age, what a bundle of inconsistencies and contradictions would appear at last!

If a man will observe as he walks the streets, I believe he will find the merriest countenances in mourning coaches.

Some people take more care to hide their wisdom than their folly.

Every man has just as much vanity as he wants understanding.

It is with narrow-souled people as with narrow-necked bottles; the less they have in them, the more noise they make in pouring it out.

So much of passion, so much of nothing to the purpose.

'Tis wit to pick a lock and steal a horse, but 'tis wisdom to let it alone.

Cheer up, man, God is still where he was.
He who serves God, is the true wise man.
Little said soon amended.

Fair words make me look to my purse.
The shortest answer does the business.

God is at the end, when we think he is furthest off.

Better suffer a great evil, than do a little

one.

Foolish tongues talk by the dozen.

Show a good man his error, and he turns it into a virtue; a bad man doubles his fault.

A wise man cares not much for what he cannot have.

Pardon others, but not thyself.

Take care to be what thou would seem. Silks and satins put out the fire in the kitchen.

Neither praise nor dispraise thyself; thy actions serve the turn.

He who pitieth another thinks on himself. Good swimmers are drowned at last.

Life is half spent, before we know what it is to live.

Wine is a turn-coat; first a friend, then an enemy.

Wine never pays for his lodging.

Time undermines us all.

Suspicion is the virtue of a coward.

Lawyers' houses are built on the heads of fools.

If things were to be done, twice, all would be wise.

The body is sooner well dressed than the soul.

Every sin brings its punishment along with it.

He that speaks me fair, and loves me not, I will speak him fair, and trust him not.

There are no gains without pains.

Then help hands, I have no lands.

What we call time enough always proves little enough.

One 'come boys' is better than two go boys.'

A little neglect may breed a great mischief: for want of a nail the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe the horse was lost; for want of a horse th the man was lost.

It was once asked, how are we to know a wise man from a fool? It was answered, turn them both out naked among strangers, and you will see.

Spare with both hands; spend only with

one.
