PERMANENT MARKING INK.

Mix together in a phial 100 grains of lunar caustic, two drachms of gum arabic, one scruple of sap green, and one ounce of rain water. The cloth to be marked must first be wetted with the following liquid, and be quite dry before writing on it.-One ounce of sal soda, dissolved in two ounces of rain water; when the articles are marked they should be exposed to the sun, which will turn the writing black. To render Paper fire proof.

Dip the paper in a strong solution of allum water, and then thoroughly dry it. In this state it will be fire proof. Some paper requires to imbibe more of the solution than a single immersion.

To stain paper or parchment yellow.

Paper may be stained a beautiful yellow by the tincture of turmeric, formed by infusing an ounce or more of root, powdered, in a pint of spirits of wine. This by afterwards adding water to it, may be made to give any tint of yellow, from the lightest straw to the full col

Curious mode of silvering Ivory.

Immerse a small slip of ivory in a weak solution of nitrate of silver, and let it remain till the solution has given it à deep yellow colour; then take it out and immerse it in a tumbler of clear water, and expose it in the water to the rays of the sun.

In about three hours the ivory acquires a black colour; but the black surface, on being rubbed, soon becomes changed to a brilliant silver.

To prevent danger from wet clothes.

Keep if possible in motion, and take care not to go near a fire, or into any very warm place, so as to occasion a sudden heat, till some time after you have been able to procure dry ones.

For the cure of violent itching of the feet from incipient Chilblains.

Sprinkle about a tea-spoon full of gun powder on the hearth, and hold the parts affected about six inches above it, then set fire to the powder. If this is done before the skin breaks, it will prevent the further progress of the chilblains.
