Mr. Matthews introduced Senate Bill No. 16, to-wit: "A Bill to reduce the military expenses of the State."

Passed first reading, and referred to the Committee on Military Affairs.

Mr. Wisener offered Senate Joint Resolution No. 13, to-wit: "Directory to the Treasurer."

On motion, the rules were suspended, and the Resolution was taken up and adopted.

Mr. Wisener offered Senate Joint Resolution No. 14, to-wit: "With respect to the Senatorial Election."

Laid over under the rules.

Mr. Cary introduced Senate Bill No. 17, to-wit: "An Act to amend the Charter of the Nashville & Middle Franklin Turnpike Road Company."

Passed first reading.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 15, reported by the Judiciary Committee, directory to the Secretary of State, in respect to certain copies of the Code of Tennessee, was taken up, and adopted.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 9, was taken up, and referred to the Committee on Federal Relations.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 11, was taken up, and adopted. Senate Joint Resolution No. 12, was taken up, and rejected. On motion of Mr. Frierson,

The rules were suspended, and Senate Joint Resolution No. 14, was taken up, and adopted.

Senate Bill No. 14, was taken up on its second reading.

Mr. Matthews offered the following amendment, to-wit: "Provided, That no person shall be entitled to the benefit of this Act who shall have been guilty of denouncing the present State Government as unconstitutional, and contributed to its overthrow, either directly or indirectly.

Lost.

Mr. Eckel offered the following amendment, to-wit: In Section No. 24, after the words "directly or indirectly," add the words, "as Claim Agent or Agents," and then strike out the remainder of Section 24.

On motion of Mr. Eckel,

The Bill and amendment, were referred to the Judiciary Committee.

Senate Bill No. 15, was taken up on its second reading, and referred to the Judiciary Committee.

Senate Bill No. 1, was taken up on its third reading, and the vote taken by ayes and noes, on its passage, with the following result:

All the members being present, the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

Mr. Elliott presented a communication from citizens of Christiana, praying a Charter for a Corporation.

Read, and referred to the Committee on Incorporations.

Report No. 3, from the Judiciary Committee, to-wit:

Mr. Speaker:-The Committee have had under consideration, Senate Bill No. 4, and have instructed me to propose the following amendments: Insert in the first section after the word "any," and before the word "election," the words, "Federal, State, County or Municipal" in third line; and strike out of the fourth line, the words, "for any purpose whatever;" and to add to said first section, the words "except thirty minutes between the hours of 12 and one o'clock;" and insert between the lines three and four in the second section, the following: "On the day of election, and for that day only, in addition to those already existing by law;" and with these amendments that the Bill pass.

The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee returned Senate Bill No. 6, to the files of the Senate, and asked that it take its place on the Calendar, which was granted.

Mr. Elliott introduced Senate Bill No. 18, to-wit: "A Bill to amend the Charter of the Tennessee Manual Labor University." Passed first reading.

Mr. Elliott introduced Senate Bill No. 19, to-wit: "A Bill to protect property from trespasses.

Passed first reading, and referred to the Judiciary Committee, with the request that they report by Bill, or otherwise.

Mr. Rodgers returned Senate Bill No. 12, to the files of the Senate, with Bill offered in lieu.

Mr. Garner introduced Senate Bill No. 20, to-wit: entitled "An Act to change the time of holding the Chancery Court of Lawrence County, Tennessee."

Passed first reading, and referred to the Judiciary Committee. Mr. Cary introduced Senate Bill No. 21, to-wit: entitled "An Act to Incorporate the Wand's Patent Roofing Company, of Nashville, Tennessee."

Passed first reading, and referred to the Committee on Incorporations.

Mr. Eaton introduced Senate Bill No. 22, to-wit: entitled "An Act to authorize Henry McPhearson to open and keep in repair a Turnpike road."

Passed first reading, and referred to the Committee on Public Roads.

Senate Bill No. 11, was taken up on its second reading, and passed. Senate Bill No. 17, was taken up on its second reading, and passed.

Senate Bill No. 4, was taken up on its second reading, on amendments offered by the Judiciary Committee.

The amendment proposed to the first section was adopted. The question was then taken up on the amendment proposed to the second section.

Mr. Smith called the ayes and noes, with the following result:

Senate Bill No. 14, on Report No. 6, was taken up on its second reading, and,

On motion of Mr. Lyle, referred to a Joint Select Committee, to be appointed.

On the part of the Senate, were: Messrs. Lyle, McCall, Keith, Aldridge, and Cary.

Report No. 7, from the Directors of the State Penitentiary, stating its condition, and its wants.

On motion of Mr. Cate, one hundred and forty copies of the Report was ordered to be printed for the use of the Senate.

Ôn motion of Mr. Smith, the vote ordering one hundred and forty copies of the Report of the Directors of the Penitentiary, was reconsidered.

Mr. Smith then moved that seven hundred copies in English, and three hundred in German, be printed for the use of the Senate.
