The Roll being called, and quorum present, the Senate proceeded to ballot a ninth time, with the following result:

Mr. Senter, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly and constitutionally elected Speaker of the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Cate, Messrs. Norman and Frierson were appointed a Committee to conduct the Speaker to the Chair, who, on taking the Chair, addressed the Senate as follows:

SENATORS: Feeling the importance and responsibility of the position you have assigned me, ånd fully appreciating the honor thus conferred, I hope that, in the discharge of the sometimes complicated and trying duties of a presiding officer, I may receive the support of the Senate; and with such support, I shall attempt to impartially preside over your deliberations.

On motion of Mr. Cate, the Senate proceeded to the election of a Principal Clerk.

The Speaker declared nominations in order.

Mr. Câte nominated D. M. Nelson, for the position.

Mr. Frierson nominated H. G. Flagg.

There being no further nominations, the Senate proceeded to ballot, with the following result:

Mr. Nelson having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly and constitutionally elected Principal Clerk of the Senate.

The Senate then proceeded to the election of Engrossing Clerk, and, nominations being in order, Mr. Rodgers nominated William Baker, for that position.

Mr. Frierson nominated Jesse French.

Mr. Smith nominated Clay Newland.

There being no further nominations, the Senate proceeded to
