353. Confession and Prayer. OH, may the power which melts the rock Be felt by all assembled here!

Or else our service will but mock The God whom we profess to fear! 2 Lord, while thy judgments shake the land, Thy peoples eyes are fix'd on thee! We own thy just, uplifted hand,

Which thousands cannot, will not see. 3 How long hast thou bestow'd thy care On this indulg'd ungrateful spot?" While other nations, far and near," Have envy'd and adinir'd our lot. 4 Here peace and liberty have dwelt,

The glorious gospel brightly shone ; And oft our enemies have felt

That God has made our cause his own. 5 But ah! both heaven and earth have heard Our vile requital of his love!

We, whom like children he has rear'd, Rebels against his goodness prove. 6 His grace despis'd his pow'r defy'd, And legions of the blackest crimes, Profaneness, riot, lust, and pride, Are signs that mark the present times. 7 The Lord, displeased, has raised his rod : Ah where are now the faithful few Who tremble for the ark of God,"

And know what Israel ought to do?

8 Lord, hear thy people every where,"
Who meet to mourn, confess, and pray;
The nation and thy churches spare,
And let thy wrath be turn'd away.

354. The Same.

1 DREADFUL sin-chastising God, If the decree is past,

If the long impending rod

Must scourge our land at last;
When thou risest to reprove

The sinners who thy judgments dare,
Spare the remnant, Lord, in love,
Thy praying people spare.

2 If on such a land as this
Thou must avenged be,
Yet preserve in perfect peace
The souls that trust in thee:
Hide their precious lives above,
And make them thy peculiar care;
Spare the remnant, Lord, in love.
Thy praying people spare.
3 Mark the men who deeply sigh
Our nature's guilt to view;
Hear their deprecating cry,
And save the mournful few:
Far from them thy plague remove,
The famine and the waste of war;
Spare the remnant, Lord, in love,
Thy praying people spare.

4 On thy little flock of sheep
O let thy goodness shine!
Smile on us who wish to weep
Beneath the hand divine.
Help us, O thou holy Dove!

To breathe the much-availing prayer;
Spare the remnant, Lord, in love.
Thy praying people spare.

#354. For a national Thanksgiving. 1TO thee, Almighty God, we bring T The humble tribute of our songs O teach our thankful hearts to sing, Or praise will languish on our tongues. 2 While Britain (favour'd of the skies)

Recalls the wonders God hath wrought;

[graphic]

Let grateful joy adoring rise, And warm to rapture every thought. 3 When hell and Rome combin'd their power, And doom'd these Isles their certain prey ; Thy hand forbade the fatal hour,

Their impious plots in ruin lay.

4 Again our restless cruel foes

Resum'd, avow'd their black design;
Again to save us God arose,

And Britain own'd the hand divine.
5 Why, gracious God, is Britain sav'd?
Why bless'd with liberty and light?
Nor by fell tyranny enslav'd,

Nor lost in superstition's night? 6 Not for our sake we conscious own; A wretched, vile, ungrateful race: 'Tis done to make thy glory known; To shew the wonders of thy grace. 7 The wonders of thy grace complete; Reform this wretched, guilty land! Let thankful love, beneath thy feet, Confess thy kind, thy guardian hand! 8 Let every age adore thy name,

While nature's circling wheels shall roll! Thy mercies every tongue proclaim,

And sound thy praise from pole to pole.

355. The Propitiation.

1 CHARG'D with the complicated load
Of all his people's debt,

By faith I see the Lamb of God
Expire beneath its weight.

2 My guilt, transferred from me to him,
Shall never more be found;

Lost in his blood's atoning stream,
And in that fountain drowned.

3 My mighty sins to thee are known,
But mightier still is he,

Who laid his life a ransom down,
And pleads his death for me.

356. On the Lapse of Time.
1 COME, let us anew,
Our journey pursue,

Roll round with the year,

And never stand still till our Master appear!
His adorable will,

Let us gladly fulfil;

And our talents improve,

By the patience of hope, and the labour of love. 2 Our life is a dream

Our time, as a stream,
Glides swiftly away,

And the fugitive moment refuses to stay:

The arrow is flown,

The moment is gone;
The millenial year.

Rushes on to our view, and eternity's near!
3 O that each in the day
Of his coming may say,

"I have fought my way through,

"I have finish'd the work thou didst give me to do!" O that each from his Lord,

May receive the glad word;

Well and faithfully done;

"Enter into my joy, and sit down on my throne."

357.

Dismissim.

I MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour
And the Father's boundless love,

With the Holy Spirit's favour,
Rest upon us from above!

2 Thus may we abide in union

With each other, and the Lord;
And possess, in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford.

The Same. 8. The S

[graphic]

1 DISMISS us with thy blessing, Lord; Help us to feed upon thy word;

All that has been amiss forgive, And let thy truth within us live. 2 Though we are guilty, thou art good; Wash all our works in Jesus' blood; Give every fetter'd soul release, And bid us all Depart in peace.

359, The Same.

1 JESUS, knit all our hearts to thee;
And join us all in one;

In our assemblies, every where,
Be thou our aim alone.

2 Reign thou sole monarch of our hearts; While we, as sinners, lie

Before the feet of thee, our Lord,
To all eternity.

360. The Same.

[graphic]

1 FATHER, before we hence depart
Send thy good Spirit down;
Let him reside in every heart,
And bless the seed that's sown.
2 Thou fountain of eternal love,
Who gav'st thy Son to die;
O let thy Spirit from above,
Enlighten and apply.

361. The Same,

1 ONCE more, before we part,

We'll bless the Saviour's name;
Record his mercies every heart;
Sing every tongue the same.
Hoard up his sacred word,
And feed thereon, and grow;
