SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

To the Board of Control of the House of Correction for Juvenile Offenders:

The Superintendent respectfully reports, that the whole number of offenders received into the House of Correction from its opening, September 2, 1856, to November 18, 1857, has been fifty-four.

Of the whole number, 50 were sentenced for larceny, 2 for vagrancy,

and 2 for prostitution.

Committed their offences for which they were sentenced, when living

with their parents, 30; when living away from home, 24.

The time for which they were sentenced as follows:

One was sentenced for 60 days.

Six for 90 days.

Two for 6 months.

Four for 1 year.

Three for 2 years.

Three for 3 years.

One for 3 years and 9 months.

One for 4 years.

Two for 5 years.

Two for 6 years.

One for 7 years.

Twenty-eight until 21 years of age.

Three boys who had served a 90 days' sentence in the House of Correction, have been since re-committed until they shall be 21 years

of age.

Of the whole number of inmates, seven had never been in jail.
Twenty-one had been in jail once.

Ten had been jail twice.

Six had been jail three times.
One had been in jail four times.
Seven had been in jail five times.
One had been in jail six times.

One had been in jail nine times.

One of the boys had served two years in the State Prison, and another had served one year in the House of Refuge in New York City.

The number of boys who have been intoxicated, 13; number who have intemperate fathers, 11; who have intemperate mothers, 4.

Of the 54 inmates, three are girls, one of them 16 years of age, and the other two 11 years old. They are all from Detroit; two having been sent for prostitution, and one for larceny. The parents of one girl had separated; the father and mother of the second were grossly intemperate, and the third was an orphan.

The amounts received at the door, from visitors, from the opening of the Institution to Nov. 18,1857, has been $36 85, of which sum $25 14 have been expended for the purchase of books and papers for the use of the inmates, and the balance now on hand is $11 71.

During the year past, a part of the boys have been employed on contract in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and for their labor the compensation has been paid of 12 cents for each day's work of seven hours, and eleven cents for each day of six hours. The amount received of Contractors for the labor of the boys, has been $486 05. mainder of the boys have been employed in grading the yard, in preparing fuel, and in the domestic work of the house.
