27 Vic. c. 7. An Act to provide for the Appointment of an Assistant Police Magistrate for the Island of New Providence. (Assented to 30th March, 1864.)

HEREAS the magisterial business usually transacted at PREAMBLE. the Police Office in the Island of New Providence has recently greatly increased, and it has in consequence become necessary to make temporary provision for the appointment of an Assistant Police Magistrate, to assist in discharging the duties which now devolve on the Police Magistrate solely, or which he is obliged by law to discharge in conjunction with another Magistrate: May it, &c.

I. Colony, not holding any office requiring attendance as prescribed by the Act of Assembly 8 Vic. ch. 39, to act as Assistant Police Magistrate for the Island of New Providence, who shall hold his office during pleasure, and shall give daily attendance either at the Police Office in the city of Nassau, or at such other place as may be authorized by the Governor, and there or elsewhere, as occasion may require, discharge the duties of a Justice of the Peace in all cases in which by law a Justice has authority to act: Provided always, that it shall in particular be the duty of the said Assistant Police Magistrate to hear and adjudicate, or otherwise dispose of all complaints made by masters, seamen and others, belonging to or employed on board of vessels arriving, or being at the port of Nassau, either for alleged breaches of contract, desertion, or other offences alleged to have been committed by the one against the other in their relative positions aforesaid: also, to assist the Police Magistrate in trying cases in which the presence of two Magistrates is required by law to give validity to a summary adjudication, and to discharge any other class of magisterial duties which may be assigned to him by order of the Governor in Council.

29 Vic. c. 22. An Act to amend the Laws relating to Salaried Justices stationed at the Out-Islands of the Government. (Assented to 11th May, 1866.)

HEREAS it is expedient to provide for house rent for PREamble. certain of the Out-Island Police Magistrates, and also to

make further provision for the travelling expenses of such Magistrates, and of the Resident Justice at Inagua, when travelling to

the Crooked Island District: May it, &c.

I. There shall be allowed and paid out of the Public Treasury House rent of these Islands, by warrant in the usual manner, to the Police allowance to Magistrates for the Districts of Harbour Island, Abaco, and Long Out-Island Island, allowances of house rent, at and after the rate of 301. II. It shall be lawful for the Governor in Council to defray out of the Public Treasury, by warrant in the usual manner, any expenses which can be shown to the satisfaction of the Governor in Council to have been necessarily incurred by the several OutIsland Magistrates and Resident Justice of Inagua, in travelling through their respective districts, in the execution of their Magisterial duties, over and above the sum of 50l. per annum, for each of such officers; provided that the entire sum of money so expended in any one year, from the 1st day of January to the 31st day of December, shall not exceed the sum of 1007.

29 Vic. c. 29. An Act to continue the Act 27 Vic. c. 7, and for other purposes. (Assented to 11th May, 1866.)

HEREAS it is desirable that the office of Assistant Police Magistrate, created by the Act 27 Vic. c. 7, should be continued for a further period, subject to the provisions hereinafter contained: May it, &c.

I. That the said recited Act, save and except so much thereof as grants a salary to the Assistant Police Magistrate, and save and except the 3rd and 4th sections thereof, shall be and the same is hereby continued in force for a period of five years, and from thence to the end of the then next session of Assembly.

II. That it shall not be lawful for the Assistant Police Magistrate to exercise in his own person any other office or place of profit within the Colony, or be appointed to serve on any Public Board, nor shall he be eligible for election, or to serve as a member of the House of Assembly of these Islands.

III. It shall be lawful for the Governor, and he is hereby requested to authorize the payment out of the Revenue, designated and known as Queen's Fines, of a salary to the said Assistant Police Magistrate, at and after the rate of 300l. per annum.

IV. The said Assistant Police Magistrate shall be entitled to contribute to the fund known as the Public Officers Widows' and Orphans' Fund, and should he so contribute, his family shall be entitled, on the event of his death, to the benefits of the Acts by which such fund is created and managed.

CONSTABULARY FORCE.

27 Vic. c. 20. An Act to consolidate and amend the Laws relating to the Stipendiary Police Force of the Colony. (Assented to 21st May, 1864.)

WE

HEREAS it is expedient to consolidate the Laws relating PREAMBLE. to the Stipendiary Police Force of the Colony, and to make

provision for augmenting the strength of such force, and increasing

its efficiency: May it, &c.

I. That the Police Force of the Colony shall be under the charge Police Force and command of an officer, to be styled Inspector of Police, who to be under shall be appointed by Commission, under the Seal at Arms, and the charge and shall hold his office during pleasure.

II. That the Inspector, subject to the orders and directions of the Governor, shall have the general superintendence and control of the said Police Force; and shall reside and discharge the duties of his office generally, on the Island of New Providence, but shall be liable to be sent, as occasion shall require, to any other part of the Colony.

III.
