Mr. Croswell, from the committee on Schools, to which the petition of H, Caulkins and others, in relation to the payment of taxes had been referred, made the following report: The committee to whom was referred the petition of Hiram Caulkins and forty-six others of Green county, praying for an amendment of the laws in order that nothing but specie or orders regularly drawn on the school fund shall be received in payment of taxes, would respectfully report that they have. had the same under consideration, and have come to the conclusion that as the laws now provide that gold and silver only is a legal tender in the payment of debts, any legislation on the subject is unnecessary, and therefore report adverse to the prayer of the petitioners and ask to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject. Mr. MaGone gave notice that on some future day he would ask leave to introduce a bill to authorize the city of Milwaukee to levy a special tax for the continuation of a certain street therein named. The following resolution introduced by Mr. Thomas on Saturday last, was taken up and adopted: "Resolved, That the 39th standing rule of this House be so altered that nine o'clock, A. M. shall be the stated time of the meeting of the House for the remainder of the present session."
