Mr. Burnett moved to amend by inserting in the 8th line of the 1st section, after the word "such," the following words: According to the laws of the United States on the subject of naturalization;"

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Croswell demanded the previous question.

And the question having been put,

"Shall the main question be now put?"

It was decided in the affirmative.

The question was then put on ordering the bill to its third reading,

Petitions were presented and referred as follows, to wit: By Mr. Cruson. A petition of inhabitants of Grant county, asking for a rail road from Milwaukee to the Mississippi; Which was referred to the committee on Internal Improve

ments.

By Mr. MaGone. A remonstrance of citizens of the town of Milwaukee against constructing a bridge across the Milwaukee river;

Laid on the table.

Also, a remonstrance of inhabitants of Milwaukee county, against a division of said county;

Laid on the table.

By Mr. Pole. A petition of citizens of Iowa county, asking for a division of said county;

Laid on the table.

By Mr. Barstow. A petition of citizens of Milwaukee county, asking for a division of said county;

Laid on the table.

By Mr. Phelps. A petition of inhabitants of the county of Green, asking for an alteration in the territorial road from

Madison to the State line of Illinois;

Mr. Billings, from the committee on Elections, to which the subject had been referred, reported

No, 54, (H. of R.) "A bill to amend an act entitled 'an act to provide for the government of the several towns in this Territory, for the revision of county government and for other purposes;'

On motion of Mr. Billings,

The rule requiring bills, &c. to be printed before being acted upon in committee of the whole, was dispensed with in reference to this bill.

Mr. Croswell, from the committee on Schools, to which the petition of H, Caulkins and others, in relation to the payment of taxes had been referred, made the following report:

The committee to whom was referred the petition of Hiram Caulkins and forty-six others of Green county, praying for an amendment of the laws in order that nothing but specie or orders regularly drawn on the school fund shall be received in payment of taxes, would respectfully report that they have. had the same under consideration, and have come to the conclusion that as the laws now provide that gold and silver only is a legal tender in the payment of debts, any legislation on the subject is unnecessary, and therefore report adverse to the prayer of the petitioners and ask to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject.

Also from the same committee to which the communication from his Excellency, the Governor, on the subject of the trespassers on the University lands had been referred, reported

No. 8, (H. of R.) "Resolution relating to trespassers on the University lands;"

Which was read the first and second times.

Mr. MaGone gave notice that on some future day he would ask leave to introduce a bill to authorize the city of Milwaukee to levy a special tax for the continuation of a certain street therein named.

The following resolution introduced by Mr. Thomas on Saturday last, was taken up and adopted:

"Resolved, That the 39th standing rule of this House be so altered that nine o'clock, A. M. shall be the stated time of the meeting of the House for the remainder of the present session."

On motion of Mr. Mooers,

The House resolved itself into a committee of the whole

on the general file of bills;

And after some time spent therein the Secretary of the Council was announced, when the Speaker took the chair and the following message was received, to wit:
