No. 49, (H. of R.) "A bill to divide the couunty of Iowa

and establish the counties of La Fayette and Montgomery ;" Was then taken up, when

Mr. Hoard, by the unanimous consent of the House amended the bill by inserting the words "and nine," immediately afthe word "eight," in the third line of the second section.

The bill was then read the third time, passed, and the title thereof agreed to.

No. 54, (H. of R.) "A bill to amend an act entitled 'an act to provide for the government of the several towns in this Territory, for the revision of county government and for other purposes,'

Was taken up and read the third time, when

Mr. Mooers asked and obtained the unanimous consent of the House to amend said bill by adding the following section :

"Sec. 3. That whenever any organized town in this Territory shall be divided, or any new town shall be organized, and by such division or new organization there shall be a less number of justices of the peace in office in such new town than is authorized by law, all such justices as are then in office shall continue to hold their offices until the expiration of the term for which they may have been elected; and it shall be lawful for the qualified electors of such town, at the next town meeting, to elect such an additional number of justices of the peace as will make up the number to which such town may be entitled by law; and such additional justices of the peace so elected shall hold their offices until the expiration of the term of the justices then in office."

The bill, as amended, was then passed and the title thereof agreed to.

Mr. Croswell, from the joint committee on Enrollment, made the following report:

The joint committee on Enrollment report as correctly enrolled, the following:

"Resolution instructing the Superintendent of Territorial Property to prepare a room for the safe keeping of the public arms and equipments ;"

"An act to provide for the collection of delinquent taxes on personal property in certain cases ;"

"Memorial to Congress upon the subject of a penitenti ́ary ;"

"An act for the benefit of Adelbert H. Bishop ;"

"An act to legalize the acts of the officers therein named ;" "An act to repeal an act entitled an act to incorporate the Wisconsin Marine and Fire Insurance Company,' approved Feb. 28, 1839;" and

"An act to authorize school district No. 1, in Sheboygan county, to levy a tax for building a school house."

The said acts and memorial were severally signed by the Speaker.

No. 42, (H. of R.) "A bill to amend an act entitled 'an act to amend an act to establish the rate of toll for grinding;" Was taken up; when

Mr. Thomas moved to amend the bill by striking out the words "this Territory," in the 1st section thereof, and inserting the words "the county of Milwaukee;"

Which was agreed to.

And a division having been called for,

There were ayes 10-noes 8.

Mr. Graves moved to amend the bill by striking out all after the enacting clause, and inserting,

"That the act entitled an act to establish the rate of toll for grinding,' be and the same is hereby repealed."

Mr. MaGone moved to re-commit said bill to the committee

of the whole;

Which was agreed to.

And a division having been called for,

There were ayes 9-noes 8.

On motion of Mr. MaGone,

The House resolved itself into committee of the whole for the consideration of bills Nos. 52 and 53, (H. of R.)

Mr. Graves in the chair.

And after some time spent therein the committee rose and by their chairman reported

No. 53, (H. of R.) "A bill to incorporate certain towns therein named ;" and

No. 52, (H. of R.) "A bill to authorize Jemison Hamilton

to build and maintain a bridge across the Peckatonica river at New Bedford, in Iowa county;"

With amendments to each.

The amendments of the committee of the whole to Nos. 52 and 53, (H. of R.) were then concurred in; and

No. 53, (H. of R.) was ordered to be engrossed for its third reading.

Mr. Billings moved that No. 52, (H. of R.) be referred to the committee on Corporations ;

Which was agreed to. ;

Mr. Jones moved that the House adjourn until half-past two o'clock;

Which was disagreed to.

On motion of Mr. Burnett,

No. 55, (H. of R.) "A bill to provide for the improvement of Grant river at Potosi in Grant county;"

Was taken up; when

Mr. Burnett moved to amend, the bill by striking out the words "two dollars," in the 3d line of the 6th section, and insert the words one dollar and fifty cents;"

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Burnett moved further to amend the bill by adding a new section;

Which was agreed to.

Said bill was then ordered to be engrossed for its third reading.

On motion of Mr. Croswell,

The House resolved itself into committee of the whole for the consideration of bills Nos. 56, 45 and 50, (H. of R.) Mr. Parker in the chair.

And after some time spent therein, the committee rose, and by their chairman reported progress, and asked leave to sit again;

Leave was granted.

Mr. Burnett then rose and made the following announce

ment:

"Mr. Speaker-Intelligence has just reached the capitol that one of the most awful calamities that can afflict humanity has befallen one of the honorable members of the Council.

I am informed that the house of the Hon. Marshall M, Strong, at Racine, has been consumed by fire, and that his wife and children have perished in the flames. This misfortune is too deep and dire to be expressed by any words that I can utter, In the feelings of woe which agonize the surviving sufferer, I am sure that every heart in this House enters with the deepest sympathy. Out of regard to his sorrows, and respect to his character and worth, I move that this House do now adjourn."

Which was unanimously agreed to.

So the House adjourned until to-morrow at nine o'clock, A. M.

Mr. Crawford introduced the following resolution :

Resolved, as the sense of this House, That Congress assert her claim to all the country west of the Rocky Mountains, known as the Oregon Territory, as far north as the fifty-fourth degree and forty minutes of north latitude; and that they immediately give notice to Great Britain of the discontinu ance of the joint occupancy of the said Territory."
