Mr. Cruson, from the select committee to which the subject had been referred, made the following report:

The select committee composed of the joint delegation, from the counties of Grant and Iowa, to whom was referred various petitions and remonstrances, for and against the formation of a new county to be formed from parts of Grant and Iowa, beg leave to present the following

REPORT.

That the whole number of petitions, asking for the forma tion of a new county, amount to one thousand and fifty seven, whilst the number on the various remonstrances on the same subject amount to twelve hundred and thirteen, leaving a majority of one hundred and fifty-six opposed to the object prayed for by the petitioners.

The citizens of Iowa county having petitioned for a division of that county by a line running east and west through the middle of town four, north, by a very large majority, renders it out of the question to expect the assent of the delegation from that county to the proposed division. The committee therefore are compelled to rely on the petitions and remonstrances solely as a basis for their action.

The committee deem it incumbent on them to carry into effect the well ascertained wishes of their constituents on all proper occasions, and therefore ask to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject
