Which was read, when

Mr. Mooers moved that said report be laid on the table and printed.

Mr. Morrow moved to amend the motion so as to order 200 copies of the report to be printed.

Which was disagreed to.

The question then recurred on the motion of Mr. Mooers, that the said report be laid on the table and printed.

And having been put,

It was decided in the affirmative.

Mr. Cruson moved that the House adjourn until half-past two o'clock P. M. ;

Which was disagreed to.

Prayer by the Rev. Mr. Spaulding.

The Journal was read and corrected.

Petitions were presented and referred as follows, to wit: By Mr. Sheldon. The petition of P. W. Nichols and 133 others, inhabitants of Sauk county, asking for the passage of a law authorizing the people to decide whether license to sell ardent spirits within the several towns and precincts of the Territory, shall or shall not be granted.

Also, the petition of Ephraim Perkins and 40 other inhabitants of Racine county, asking for a law submitting the question of license or no license to sell spirituous liquors, to the electors of the several towns and precincts of the Territory.

Also, the petition of 38 ladies of Racine county upon the same subject.

Which were, on his motion,

Referred to the committee on the Judiciary.

By Mr. Jones. A remonstrance against an alteration of the territorial road leading from Madison to Big Foot Prairie, signed by nineteen inhabitants of the town of Janesville, Rock county;

Referred to the committee on Roads.

Also, a remonstrance against a division of the town of Centre, in the county of Rock, signed by 93 inhabitants of said town;

Referred to the committee on Corporations.

By Mr. Pole. Two petitions of the inhabitants of Wiota, Iowa county, praying for a division of said county;

Which was, on his motion,

Referred to a select committee consisting of the members from Iowa county.

By Mr. Morrow. A petition from the citizens of Portage. county praying for a division of said county;

Referred to the committee on the Judiciary.

Also, two petitions of the inhabitants of Sheboygan county praying for the establishment of a rail road by way of Fond du Lac to the Wisconsin river.

Also, the petition of 112 inhabitants of Fond du Lac county upon the same subject; which were,

On motion of Mr. Morrow,

Referred to a select committee, consisting of Messrs. Morrow, Fisher and Billings.

Mr. Crawford, agreeably to previous notice and by leave, introduced

No. 3, (H. of R.) "Resolution requiring the Superintendent of Territorial Property to discontinue all territorial suits now pending;"

Which was read the first and second times. Also,

No. 17, (H. of R.) "A bill to repeal all laws regulating the sale of intoxicating liquors ;"

Which was read the first and second times.

On motion of Mr. Fisher,

Ordered, That the rule requiring bills, &c. to be printed before being acted upon in committee of the whole, be suspended with reference to the said bill and resolution.

Mr. Mooers moved that said resolution No. 3, (H. of R.) be referred to the committee on Territorial Affairs.

Which was agreed to.

And a division having been called for,

There were ayes 17-noes 8.

Mr. Jackson moved that said bill No. 17. (H. of R.) be referred to the committee on the Judiciary.

Mr. Mooers moved to amend the motion so as to refer said bill to the committee on Schools,

Which was decided in the negative.

And a division having been called for,

There were ayes 5-noes 21.

The question then recurred on the motion of Mr. Jackson that said bill be referred to the committee on the Judiciary, And having been put,

It was decided in the affirmative.

Mr. Brawley gave notice that he would on to-morrow, or some future day, ask leave to introduce a bill to amend an act entitled an act to incorporate the Wisconsin River Navigation Company.

Mr, Billings, from the committee on Elections, reported No. 18, (H. of R.) "A bill to authorize a special election. in the county of Marquette;"

Which was read the first and second times.

Mr. Burnett, from the committee on the Judiciary, to whom had been referred a petition of William Lawrence asking for a divorce from his wife, Clarissa Lawrence, reported that in the opinion of the committee the prayer of the petitioner ought not to be granted;

Which report was accepted by the House, and the committee discharged from the further consideration of the subject. Mr. Brawley, from the committee on Roads, to whom the subject had been referred, made the following report, viz;

"The committee on Roads, to whom was referred the petition of certain inhabitants of the county of Dodge, praying for the repeal of so much of the law relating to roads, as author

izes the supervisors of highways, to enter upon the land adjoining and take such timber as may be necessary for the construction and repairs of the highways, would respectfully report, that they have had the petition referred to them under consideration, and upon an examination of the law on that subject, have come to the conclusion that the prayer of the petitioners ought not to be granted, and ask to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject.

All of which is respectfully submitted.

A. BRAWLEY, Chairman." Which report was accepted by the House and the committee discharged from the further consideration of the subject. Mr. Dennis, from the select committee to whom the subject had been referred, reported bill

No. 19, (H. of R.) "A bill to re-organize certain towns in Jefferson county;"

Which was read the first and second times.

Mr. Hoard, agreeably to previous notice and by leave, introduced

No. 20, (H. of R.) "A bill to repeal the fourth section of an act entitled " an act to amend an act entitled ' an act for assessing and collecting county revenue,'' approved February 19th, 1841;"

Which was read the first and second times.

Mr. Cruson, from the committee on Engrossed Bills, reported No. 1. (H. of R.) "A bill to change the form of government in the county of Washington, and for other purposes;" As correctly engrossed.

Mr. Sheldon moved that said bill be referred to the committee on Corporations;

Which was disagreed to.

Mr. Mooers asked and obtained the unanimous consent of the House to amend the bill by striking out the word contracting," in the sixth line of the twentieth section, and inserting the word "constructing," in place thereof.

On motion of Mr. Billings,

The said bill was re-committed to the committee on Engrossed Bills.

On motion of Mr. Sheldon,

Ordered, that the Chief Clerk be directed to request the Hon. the Council to return to this House

No. 5, (C.) "A bill respecting judgments in criminal cases," for their further action.

On motion of Mr. Cruson,

The House then resolved itself into committee of the whole on the general file of bills,

Mr. Phelps in the chair.

The Secretary of the Council was announced, when the Speaker took the chair, and the following message was received, to wit:

"Mr. Speaker-I am directed to return to this House for its further action

No. 5, (C.) A bill respecting judgments in criminal cases.'

The Council have passed

No. 10, (C.) A bill for the relief of Benton and Garfield,'
In which the concurrence of this House is requested."
The committee again resumed its session,

And after some time spent therein, rose, and by their chairman reported

No. 1, (C.) "A bill to authorize persons having a lien upon land to pay the taxes on the same;"

No. 2, (C.) "A bill relating to Coroners," and

No. 3, (C.) "A bill providing for authentic statements as to the titles to real estate;"

With amendments to each.

And also reported progress on the general file of bills and asked leave to sit again thereon.

Leave was granted.

The amendments to No. 1, (C.) were then concurred in. Mr. Cruson, from the committee on Engrossed Bills, by leave reported

No. 1, (H. of R.) "A bill to change the form of government of the county of Washington, and for other purposes;" As correctly engrossed.

On motion of Mr. MaGone,

The House adjourned umtil half past two o'clock, P. M.
