ral reports already made. From which it appears, that in the one case the committee were satisfied that Mr. Baxter was entitled to the sum of $1008 55, and in the other case, $1372 14.

It further appears that the contract price for the completion of the Capitol was let to Mr. Baxter for $7000, subject to such alterations in the specifications made in the contract as the Commissioner of Public Buildings from time to time. should direct, and to be deducted from said contract or allowed in addition thereto, as said Commissioner should estimate, for which Mr. Baxter was to be paid as the work progressed in territorial bonds, and upon which it is shown that Mr. Baxter never received but $6000 of said bonds-$1000 being retained in the hands of the Treasurer as an indemnity against any failure or deficiency in the work of said contract.

In view of which, in connection with the reports previously made in behalf of Mr. Baxter, your committee, anxious to bring this long harrassing subject to a final adjustment, have unanimously agreed to submit the following resolution, recommending its passage, to the House, and hoping that it may receive the concurrence of the Council.

No. 4, (H. of R.) "A resolution providing for the final settlement of the claims of Daniel Baxter;"

Which was read the first and second times.

On motion, the rule requiring bills, &c. to be printed before being acted upon in the committee of the whole was suspended with reference to

Bills Nos. 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26, memorial No, 3, and resolution No. 4, (H. of R.) above referred to.

The message from the Council was taken up, and

No. 4, (C.) "Joint resolution relative to procuring a set of standard weights and measures;"

No. 3, (C.) "A memorial to Congress for the improvement of the Fox and Wisconsin rivers ;" and

No. 23, (C.) "A bill to provide for the payment of A. Botkin's account for services rendered while Auditor of the Territory;"

Were read the first and second times.

No. 4, (H. of R.) "A bill to amend an act entitled 'an act concerning divorce;'"

Was taken up, and the question having been put on concurring in the amendment of the Council to said bill,

It was decided in the negative.

Mr. Cruson from the committee on Engrossed Bills, by leave, reported as correctly engrossed the following:

No. 10, (H. of R.) "A bill giving further time to appeal from the decisions of judges of probate ;"

No. 15, (H, of R.) “A bill to abolish the office of county collector;"

No, 16, (H. of R.) "A bill in addition to an act entitled an act to amend an act of the Revised Statutes entitled' an act concerning the writ of attachment,' approved February 15th, 1842;' and

No. 20, (H. of R.) "A bill to repeal the fourth section of an act entitled an act to amend an act entitled an act for assessing and collecting county revenue," approved February 19th, 1841."

The said bills were severally taken up, read the third time, passed, and the titles thereof agreed to,

Also, the following:

No. 6, (C.) "A bill relating to the purchase and redemption of real estate sold on execution;"

No. 12, (C.) "A bill to provide for the payment of certain claims against the Territory;" and

No. 18, (C.) "A bill to provide for the payment of M. M. Jackson's account for services as Attorney General."

And the ayes and noes having been called for, on the pas sage of bill No. 20, (H. of R.)

Those who voted in the affirmative were,

Messrs. Billings, Brawley, Brown, Burnett, Clapp, Croswell, Cruson, Dennis, Earll, Graves, Hoard, Jones, MaGone, Mooers, Parker, Pole, Thomas and Darling, (Speaker,)—18. Those who voted in the negative were,

Messrs. Crawford, Fisher, Jackson, Sheldon and Wooster -5.

So the bill was passed and the title thereof agreed to.

On motion of Mr. MaGone,

The House resolved itself into committee of the whole on the general file of bills;

Mr. Jackson in the chair.

And after some time spent therein, the committee rose, and by their chairman reported

No. 18, (H. of R.) "A bill to authorize a special election in the county of Marquette;""

No. 3. (H. of R.) "A bill to change the time of holding courts in certain counties in the second judicial district ;"

No. 21, (H. of R.) "A bill to amend an act entitled 'an act to incorporate the Wisconsin River Navigation Company ;'"

No. 25, (H. of R., "A bill to organize the county of Sheboygan for judicial purposes;"

No. 3, (C.) "A memorial to Congress for the improvement of the Fox and Wisconsin rivers ;"

No. 4, (C.) "Joint resolution relative to procuring a set of standard weights and measures;" and

No. 23, (C.) A bill to provide for the payment of A. Bot- ' kin's account for services rendered while Auditor of the Territory;"

Without amendment; and

No. 2. (H. of R.) "A bill to amend the election law concerning justices of the peace ;" and

No. 19, (H. of R.) "A bill to re-organize certain towns in Jefferson county;"

With amendments to each.

And also reported progress on the general file of bills and asked leave to sit again thereon.

Leave was granted.

The amendments to bills Nos. 2 and 19, (H. of R.) were then concurred in.

And the said bills were ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

Mr. Morrow moved that bill No. 18, (H. of R.) be re-committed to the committee on Elections;

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Dennis moved to amend No. 3, (H. of R.) by adding the following section:

"Sec. 4. That the district court for the county of Dodge shall hereafter be holden on the second Monday of May and the third Monday of September."

Mr. Mooers moved to amend the amendment, by adding thereto the following:

"The county of Dodge shall comprise a part of the second judicial district."

Mr. Jackson moved that the said bill, together with the proposed amendments, be referred to the committee on the Judiciary;

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Brown moved to amend bill No. 21, (H. of R.) as fol lows:

"Strike out all after the enacting clause and insert,

Sec. 1. That the 9th section of the act to which this act is amendatory, shall be so amended as to compel the said company to commence the said dam within two years, and complete the same within four years;"

Which was agreed to.

The said bill was then ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

Mr. Morrow moved to amend No. 25, (H. of R.) by inserting after the word" aforesaid," in the 3d section, the words "together with a transcript of the record in each case;"

Which was agreed to.

The said bill was then ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

On motion of Mr. MaGone,

The House adjourned until half-past two o'clock P. M.

No. 11, (C.) 'A bill to amend the act concerning proceedings in courts of record, and for other purposes;'
