"May deep repentance, faith, and love,"
Be sought by me with studious care;
And may each day's returning eve,
Prove me both humble and sincere.

Grant me thy grace to live anew

Each day, each hour, my God to Thee;
And let thy sacred word of truth
Teach my young soul from sin to flee.

Dear Jesus, let thy precious blood
For all my guilty sins atone:
And when I pass through Jordan's flood,
Let thy kind angels bear me home,

To thine abode, and there I'll raise
My voice in shouts of praise to thee;
And through eternity's unfading days,
Sing of that grace which made me free.

MORNING.

NEW every morning is the love,

Our wakening and uprising prove;

Through sleep and darkness safely brought, Restored to life and power and thought.

New mercies, each returning day,
Hover around us, while we pray ;—
New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

If on our daily course our mind
Be set, to hallow all we find,

New treasure, still of countless price,
God will provide the sacrifice :-

:

Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be,
As more of heaven in each we see;
Some softening gleam of love and prayer
Shall dawn on every cross and care.

We need not bid, for cloister'd cell,
Our neighbour and our friend farewell;
Nor strive to wind ourselves too high
For sinful men beneath the sky.

The trivial round, the common task,
Would furnish all we ought to ask;
Room to deny ourselves—a road
To bring us daily nearer God.

EVENING.

SUN of my soul! Thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if thou be near;
Oh! may no earth-born cloud arise,
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.

When with dear friends sweet talk I hold, And all the flowers of life unfold:

Let not my heart within me burn,

Except in all I Thee discern.

When the soft dews of kindly sleep,
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, How sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast!

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

Come near, and bless us when we wake, 'Ere through the world our way we take ; Till in the ocean of thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

CONFIRMATION.

O HAPPY day that fix'd my choice
On thee, my Saviour and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
And tell thy goodness all abroad.

Oh! happy bond that seal'd my vows
To him who merits all my love!
Let cheerful anthems fill his house,
While to his sacred throne I move.

'Tis done! the great transaction's done! Deign, gracious Lord, to make me thine; Help me, through grace, to follow on, Glad to confess thy voice divine.

Now rest my long divided heart,
Fix'd on this blissful centre, rest;
Freely with all things earthly part,
With Christ to dwell, with Christ to feast.

May God who heard the solemn vow,
From day to day impart his grace,
To work obedience in me now,
And fit me to behold his face.

DODDRIDGE.

CONTENTMENT.

IF solid happiness we prize,
Within our breast this jewel lies,

And they are fools who roam:
The world hath nothing to bestow—
From our own selves our bliss must flow,

And that dear hut-our home.

Of rest was Noah's dove bereft,
When, with impatient wing, she left

That safe retreat, the ark,
Giving her vain excursions o'er,
The disappointed bird once more
Explored the sacred bark.

No borrow'd joys! they're all our own!
While to the world we live unknown,
Or by the world forgot :

Monarchs, we envy not your state,
We look with pity on the great,
And bless our humble lot.

Our portion is not large, indeed,
But then, how little do we need,
For nature's calls are few!
In this the art of living lies,

To want no more than may suffice,
And make that little do.

We'll therefore relish with content
Whate'er kind Providence hath sent,

Nor aim beyond our power;
For if our stock be very small,
'Tis prudent to enjoy it all,
Nor lose the present hour.

To be resign'd when ills betide,
Patient when favours are denied,

And pleased with favours given;
Dear Chloe, this is wisdom's part,
This is the incense of the heart,

Whose fragrance swells to heaven.
