FOR

OR the good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I, myself, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

O

LIGHT of life, seraphic fire!

Love divine, thyself impart;
Every fainting soul inspire;
Enter every drooping heart;
Every mournful spirit cheer;

Scatter all our doubt and gloom :
Father, in thy grace appear,
To thy human temples come!

Come in this accepted hour,
Bring thy heavenly kingdom in ;
Fill us with thy glorious power,
Rooting out the seeds of sin.
Nothing more can we require;
We can rest in nothing less:
Be thou all our heart's desire,

All our joy, and all our peace.

LORD, put thy good Spirit into all our hearts: that we, being made pure and holy in our secret thoughts. may not fail to perform all that is acceptable in thy sight. May we have an eye single to thy glory; and may we undertake no employment on which we cannot ask thy bless.. ing. Give us grace that we may desire to do that which is most excellent. May no spirit of self-indulgence, no love of ease, no dread of opposition, no fear of shame, prevent our laying out our lives heartily in thy service. Make us willing to deny ourselves that we may live unto thee. Give us the spirit of thy children of old, who counted not their lives dear to themselves, that they might finish their course with joy. Amen.

JESUS saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for

them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

But he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

I KNOW not what the future hath
Of marvel or surprise;

Assured alone that life and death
His mercy underlies.

And so beside the silent sea

I wait the muffled oar;

No harm can come from him to me
On ocean or on shore.

I know not where his islands lift
Their fronded palms in air;

I only know I cannot drift
Beyond his love and care.

`TERNAL God, who hast neither dawn nor evening,

E1

yet sendest us alternate mercies of the darkness and the day: there is no light but thine, without, within. As thou liftest the curtain of night from our abodes, take also the veil from all our hearts. Rise with thy morning upon our souls; quicken all our labor and our prayer; and, though all else declines, let the noontide of thy grace and peace remain. May we walk, while it is yet day, in the steps of him who, with fewest hours, finished thy divinest work. Amen.

BECAUSE thou hast made the Lord thy refuge, and

the Most High thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

GOD

My God! thy boundless love I praise;
How bright on high its glories blaze!
How sweetly bloom below!

It streams from thine eternal throne;
Through heaven its joys for ever run,
And o'er the earth they flow.

Then let the love that makes me blest,
With cheerful praise inspire my breast,
And ardent gratitude;

And all my thoughts and passions tend
To thee, my Father and my Friend,

My soul's eternal good.

OD of our lives, Maker of heaven and earth, who dost every morning command the light to shine out of darkness: shine into our hearts now, and give us the light of the knowledge of thy glory; let an everlasting day dawn within us. As we have risen refreshed by repose, we would go forth with heart and hand ready for every good work; we would return to our active duties with a fresh sense of the true value and purposes of life, and more deeply impressed than ever by the thought of the momentous consequences involved in all that we think and say and do. But without thee, all our strength is naught, and we shall labor in vain. Grant us thy blessing, O God. Be with us this day to guard and guide. Amen.

LL nations whom thou hast made shall come and

A worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy

name.

Teach me thy way, O Lord: I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

[blocks in formation]

UR Father in heaven, we live under thy care and blessing. Though we may be separated from each other, we cannot depart from thy presence. Watch over us, we pray thee, wherever we may be; and keep us from all evil. Fill our hearts with thy love, and lead us in the safe and pleasant ways of innocence and wisdom. Keep us, O Father, beneath the shadow of thy wing. Make us strong to resist temptation, active in doing thy holy will, pure in all our thoughts, kind and loving to each other and to all men. So may we live that, when parted here on earth, we may be prepared to meet again in heaven. Amen.

HE

E that dwelleth.in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror of the night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

BLESSED be thy name for ever,

Thou of life the Guard and Giver!
Thou who slumberest not nor sleepest,
Blest are they thou kindly keepest!
God of stillness and of motion,
Of the rainbow and the ocean,
Of the mountain, rock, and river,
Blessed be thy name for ever!

God of evening's peaceful ray;
God of every dawning day,
Rising from the distant sea,
Breathing of eternity:

Thine the flaming sphere of light,
Thine the darkness of the night;
God of life, that fade shall never,
Glory to thy name for ever!

GOD, who leadest us through seasons of life to be partakers of thine eternity: the shadows of our evening hasten on. Quicken us betimes, and spare us that sad word, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved." Anew we dedicate ourselves to thee. We would ask nothing, reserve nothing, for ourselves, save only leave to go whither thou mayst guide, to live not far from thee, and die into thy nearer light. Content to accept the reproach of truth and the self-denials of pure integrity, we would take upon us the yoke of Christ, whom it behooved to suffer ere he entered into his glory. Even as he said to all, “If any man come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." So, Father, help us to live in his spirit, and walk in his footsteps, even unto death. Amen.
