JANUARY 1.

The work of Life.

IS mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

JANUARY 2.

Fulfilling Righteousness.

HEN cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

JANUARY 3.

Not Bread alone.

HEN was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil. And when he had

fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterwards an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of Gɔd.

JANUARY 4.

No Presumption. HEN the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith

unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. S. MATT. iv. 5-7.

JANUARY 5.

Worship.

GAIN, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. S. MATT. iv. 8-10.

JANUARY 6.

Manifestation.

OHN stood, and two of his disciples, and looking upon Jesus, he said, Behold the Lamb of God!

The two disciples followed Jesus. And Jesus said, What seek ye? They said, Master, where dwellest thou? He said, Come and see. One of the two was Andrew findeth his brother Simon, and saith, We have found the Messias. And he brought him to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona; thou shalt

JANUARY 7. Calling. HE day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. S. JOHN i. 43-45.

JANUARY 8.

Recognition.

KATHANAEL said, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith, Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile. Nathanael saith, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus said, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the figtree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel !

JANUARY 9.

Mediation.

ESUS answered, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? Thou shalt see greater things than these. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son
