BOOK I.

PSALMS I-XLI.

"David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue."-II Sam. XXIII. I, 2.

"In all his works he praised the Holy One most high with words of glory; with his whole heart he sung songs, and loved him that made him."-Ecclus. XLVII. 8.

In the First Book alone there are no Psalms that bear any other name than David's. The book was probably arranged by him for the Temple worship, prior to his numbering of the people.-(II Sam. XXIV. 1.)

Herein we see Christ in covenant relation with His people, and they though in the midst of trials walking in communion with Him.

The Name Jehovah, that is, God revealed to His chosen people as the One Only, True, and Living God, occurs constantly, while the Name Elohim, the absolute Name of God, is found very seldom.

NOTE.- Jehovah is translated LORD, and rarely GOD (thus printed in capitals in the American Psalter as in the K. J. version). Elohim is translated God. The word Lord (in small letters), stands for the Hebrew Adonai or Master, which in the public reading of the Scriptures is by the Jews always substituted for the ineffable Name; the common form of which, Jehovah, has the vowels of the word Adonai. It is not known how it was spoken. 'Yahveh' is probably an approach to the correct form. For the form JAH, see Ps.
