Anfw. That we must, through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God; and that he is pacified towards us, for all that we have done, Acts xix. 22. Ezek. xvi. 63.

Anfw. In his undergoing the curfed death of the cross, Phil. ii, 8.

Quest, 28. Why is the death of the cross called a curfed death?

Anfw. Because God, in teftimony of his anger against breaking the firft covenant, by eating the fruit of the forbidden tree, had faid, Curfed is every one that hangeth on a tree, Gal. iii. 13.

Queft. 29. What evidences are there that Chrift was made a curfe for us in his death?

Anfw. In as much as there was no pity, no fparing in his death; God spared him not, and wicked men were let loose upon him like dogs and bulls, Rom. viii. 32. Pfal. xxii. 12, 16.

Anfw. That he hath redeemed us from the curfe of the law, being made a curse for us, Gal. iii. 13. Queft. 35. How did Chrift humble himself in what paffed upon him after his death?

Anfw. In being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time, I Cor. xv. 4.

Queft. 36. What respect was paid unto the dead body of Chrift before its burial?

Anfw. Jofeph of Arimathea bought fine linen, and Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, and they took the body of Jefus, and wound it in linen cloths, with the fpices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury, Mark xv. 46. John xix. 39, 40.

Anfw. In a new fepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid, John xix. 41.

Queft. 38. Why was it fo ordered in providence, that he should be laid in a new fepulchre ?

Anfw. That none might have it to say, that it was another, and not he, that rofe from the dead, Acts iv. 10.

Queft. 39. What do you understand by these words in the CREED, He defcended into hell?

Anfw. Nothing elfe but his defcending into the

Anfw. To fhew that he was really dead, this being neceffary to be believed, 1 Cor. xv. 3.

Queft. 44. What fign, or type, was there of his continuing fo long in the grave?

Anfw. The fign of the prophet Jonas, Matth. xii. 40. As Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, fo fhall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Queft. 45. Did he fee corruption in the grave, like other men?

Anfw. No: being God's Holy One, abfolutely free of fin, his body could fee no corruption, Pfal. xvi. 10.

Queft. 46. What may we learn from Christ's being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time?

Anfw. That the grave being the place where the Lord lay, it cannot but be sweet to a dying faint, to think that he is to lie down in the fame bed; and that, in like manner, as Jefus died and rofe again, even fo them alfo which fleep in Jefus, will God bring with him, Matth. xxviii. 6. 1 Theff. iv. 14.

28. QUEST. Wherein confifleth Chrift's exaltation?

ANSW. Chrift's exaltation confifteth, in his rifing again from the dead, on the third day, in afcending up into heaven, in fitting at the right-hand of God the Father, and in coming to judge the world at the laft day.

Queft. 1. What do you understand by Chrift's ExALTATION?

Anfw. Not the conferring of any new glory upon his divine perfon, which is abfolutely unchangeable; but a manifeftation, in the human nature (which had eclipfed it for a while) of the fame glory, of which he was eternally poffeffed, as the Son of God, John xvii. 5. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own felf, with the glory which L had with thee before the world was.

Queft. 2. Why doth Chrift's exaltation follow immediately upon the back of his humiliation ?

Anfw. Because it is the proper reward thereof, Phil ii 8, 9.---He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross, wherefore God aljo hath highly exalted him.

Queft. 3. What is the confequence of Chrift's exaltation, with respect to himself?

Anfw. That the ignominy of the cross is thereby fully wiped off, Heb. xii. 2.

Queft. 4. What is the delign thereof with reSpect unto us?

Anfw. God raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory, that our faith and hope might be in God, I Pet. i. 21.

Queft, 5. What are the several steps of Chrift's exaltation, mentioned in the answer? Anfw. They

Queft. 8. How can the day of Christ's resurrection be called the third day, when he was not two full days in the grave before?

Anfw. It is ufual in fcripture to denominate the aubole day, from the remarkable event that happens in any hour of it: thus Chrift being crucified and buried on the evening before the Jewish fabbath, and rifing early in the morning after it, is faid to rife again the third day according to the fcriptures, 1 Cor. xv. 4.

Queft. 9. How may the truth of Chrift's refurrection be demonftrated?

Anfw. From its being prefigured and foretold, and from its being attefted by unquestionable witneffes and infallible proofs, Acts i. 3.

Queft. 10. How was the refurrection of Chrift prefigured?

Anfw. By Abraham's receiving Ifaac from the dead, as a figure or reprefentation thereof, Heb. xi. 19.

Queft. 11. Was his refurrection foretold in the fcriptures of the Old Teftament?

Anfw. The apostle Paul exprefly affirms that it was, Acts xiii. 32,38. The promife, fays he,
