Queft. 104. What is that other book, out of which the faints fhall be judged?

Anfw. It is the book of life, Rev. xx 12.

Quek. 105. What is regiftred in this book?

Anfw. The names of all the elect, Luke x. 20. --Your NAMES are written in heaven, Rev. iii. 5. I will not blot out his NAME out of the book of life.

Queft. 106. Why is it called the book of life? Anjw. Because it contains God's gracious and unchangeable purpose, to bring all the elect to falvation, or eternal life, through fanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth, 2 Theff. ii. 13.

Queft. 107. In whofe hands is this book lodged?. Anjw. In the hands of the Mediator, Chrift Jefus, Deut. xxxiii. 3.---- All his faints are in thy hand. Queft. 108. What is the ground of the jaints abfol viture, according to this book?

Anfw. The book of life being opened, it will be known to all, who are elected, and who not: Christ will, as it were, read out every man and woman's name, recorded in this book, Rev. iii. 5.---I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Queft. 109. Whether will the caufe of the righte ous or the wicked be firft difcuffed?

Anfw. As the dead in Christ shall rise first, (1 Theff. iv. 16.) fo it appears from Matth. xxv. 34, and 41. compared, that the judgment of the faints, on the right-hand, will have the preference.

Queft. 110. What is the bleffed fentence that fhall be pronounced upon the faints ?

Anfw. Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you, from the foundation of the world, Matth. xxv. 34.

Queft. 111. For what reafon will this fentence be pronounced first?

Anfw. Because the faints are to fit in judgment, as Chrift's affeffors, against wicked men and angels, 1 Cor. vi. 3, 4.

Queft. 112. Upon what footing, or foundation, will this fentence pass?

Anfw. Upon the footing of free grace alone, reigning, through the imputed righteousness of the furety, unto eternal life, Rom. v. 21.

Queft. 113. Is it not said, Rev. xx. 13. that they are judged every man according to their works?

Anfw. The fentence paffes upon the faints, ACCORDING 10 their works, as flowing from an heart renewed and fanctified, but not FOR their works, nor for their faith neither, as if eternal life were any way merited by them; for the kingdom is faid to be prepared for them: they inherit it as fons; but do not procure it to themselves, as fervants do their wages, Gal. iii. 18. Eph. i 11. Col. iii. 24.

Queft. 114. Are not good works mentioned as the ground of the fentence, Matth. xxv. 35, 36. I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat, etc.?

Anfw. Thefe good works are mentioned not as grounds of their fentence, but as evidences of their union with Chrift, and of their right and title to heaven in him, John xv. 8, 14.; even as the apotle fays, in another cafe, of the unbelieving Jews, 1 Cor. x. 5. With many of them God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness their overthrow in the wilderness, was not the ground of God's displeasure with them, but the evidence of it,

Queft. 115. Will there be any mention made of the fins of the righteous?

Anfw. No: In that time, the iniquity of Ifrael Shall be fought for, aud there fhall be none; and the fins of Judah, and they shall not be found, Jer. 1. 20. Who fhall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? it is God that justifieth, etc. Rom. viii. 33, 34.

Queft. 116. What will follow upon the faints receiving their fentence of abfolution?

Anfw. They hall judge the world, 1 Cor. vi. 2.

Queft. 117. In what way and manner Shall they judge the world?

Anfw. As affeffors to Chrift the Judge, confenting to his judgment as juft, and saying Amen to the . doom pronounced against all the ungodly, Pfal. cxlix. 6, 7, 8, 9. Rev. xix, 1, 2.

Queft. 118. What will be the fentence of damnation that shall pass upon the ungodly?

Anfw. Depart from me, ye curfed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels, Matth. xxv. 41.

Queft. 119. How is the mifery of the wicked aggravated, by the pronouncing of this fentence?

Anfw. In as much as they are damned by him who came to fave finners, and muft undergo the wrath of the Lamb, from which they can make no escape, Rev. vi, 16, 17.

Queft. 120 Is there any injury, or wrong, done them by this fentence?

Anfw. By no means: for, fays our Lord, I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat, etc. Matth.

XXV. 42, 43.

Queft. 121. Are these evils no more than evidences of their curfed ftate?

Anfw. They are not only evidences of their ungodly state, but they are the proper causes and grounds of their condemnation: for, though good works do not merit falvation, yet evil works merit damnation, Rom. vi. 23. The wages of lin is death. Queft. 122. Why are fins of omiffion only mentioned in the above paffage?

An/w. To fhew, that if men fhall be condem ned for fins of omiffion, much more for these of commiffion, James ii. 13. Rom. ii. 23, 24.

Quelt. 123. What will follow upon the jentence of condemnation against the wicked ?

Anfw. The immediate execution thereof, without the least reprieve or delay, Matth. xxii. 13.

Queft. 124. Will the devils also be judged? Anfw. Yes: they are referved unto the judgment of the great day, Jude ver. 6.

Queft. 125. How can they be faid to be reserved unto the judgment of that day, when they are condemned already?

Anfw. Though from the first moment of their finning, they were fubject unto the wrath of God, and carry their hell about with them, yet their final Sentence is referved for that day, 2 Pet. ii. 4.

Queft. 126. What is the final fentence unto which they are referved ?

Anfw. A moft dreadful addition and acceffion to their prefent torments, not only by the holy triumph which the faints fhall have over them, as vile, vanquished, and contemptible enemies; but likewife, by the eternal restraint that shall be laid upon them, from hurting the elect any more; and that, by being fhut up, and clofely confined in the prifon of hell, under the utmost extremity of anguish and horror for ever and ever, Rev. xx to.

Quest. 127. Who will keep the field on that day? Anfw. Chrift, and his glorious company they fhall fee the backs of all their enemies, for the DAMNED fhall go off first; as feems to be intimated in the order mentioned, Matth. xxv. 46. Thefe fhall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.

Queft. 128. What improvement ought we to make of Chrift's coming to judge the world at the last day?

Anfw. To be diligent that we be found of him in peace at that day, by clofing with him in the offer of the gospel now to be looking for, and hafting unto the coming of the day of God, having our Loins girded about, and our lights burning; that fo when he comes, whether at death or judgment, we may be able to fay, with joy, Lo! this is our God, we have waited for him, 2 Pet. iii. 12, 14. Luke xii. 35. lfa. xxv. 9. 29. QUEST.

29. QUEST. How are we made partakers of the redemption purchafed by Chrift? ANSW. We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Chrift, by the effectual application of it to us by his Holy Spirit.

Queft. 1. What do you understand by redemption in this answer?

Anfw. The whole of that falvation which is revealed and exhibited in the gofpel, Pfal. cxxx. 7,8. Queft. 2. Why is redemptionfaid to be purchased? Anfw. Because having brought ourselves into a state of bondage and fervitude, we could not be ranfomed, but at a great price, Gal. iv. 24. 1 Cor. vi. 20. Queft. 3. What was the price of our redemption? Anfw. The precious blood of Chrift, 1 Pet. i. 19. Queft. 4. What is it to partake of this redemption? Anfw. It is to have a fhare therein, or to be entered upon the begun poffeffion of it, 1 Cor. x. 17. Queft. 5. Can we make ourselves partakers of redemption?

Anfw. No: we must be MADE partakers thereof, Heb. iii 14. We are MADE partakers of Christ, etc. Queft. 6. Why cannot we make ourselves par takers of it?

Anfw. Because we are altogether without firength; and utterly averfe to all fpiritual good, Rom. v. 6. John v. 40.

Queft. 7. How then are we made partakers of redemption?

Anfw. By the application of it to us, or conferring it upon us, John x. 28.

Queft. 8. What is meant by the application of redemption?

Anfw. The making of it our own, to all the ends
