...

"The translation of this beautiful volume is not usually known as Wikliffe's.
Judging from the greater rudeness of the language, I conceive this to be the
earlier."

The Rev. H. H. BABER thus speaks of the two translations—
"In some places we trace no other similarity betwixt these versions, thau that
which arises from the circumstance of their being made from one common
original, the Latin Vulgate; but in general we discover features of re-
semblance between them so numerous and so striking, that it is most clear
that the author of the later translation not only saw but copied very freely
from that which had been previously completed.”

Lond. 1865...

57. 55.

This volume contains the whole of the New Testament, with numerous Engravings on Wood from designs of Fra Angelico, Pietro Perugino, Francesco Francia, Lorenzo di Credi, Fra Bartolommeo, Titian, Raphael, Gaudenzio Ferrari, Daniele da Volterra, and others.

"It is not too much to say, that in the history of Wood engraving this volume has no equal. It is a gallery of the Christian History, popularised but not vulgarised by the extraordinary perfection to which this branch of art is now carried in this country. The only criticism we have heard addressed to it, is that it ceases to be wood engraving, because it has acquired the minuteness and finish of engraving on steel: no doubt it has those qualities, but it combines them with a softness and tone which no steel engraving ever yet gave.” -EDINBURGH REVIEW.
