His works are of a very miscellaneous nature, both in prose and verse, and are remarkable chiefly for the racy and original anecdotes which they contain relating to contemporaries. He is the only Welsh writer of any importance who has contributed so much to the mediaeval literature of this country, or assumed, in consequence of his nationality, so free and independent a tone.

In a subject of so vast a range, it was important that the historical student should be able to select such volumes as conformed with his own peculiar tastes and studies, and not be put to the expense of purchasing the whole collection ; an inconvenience inseparable from any other plan than that which has been in this instance adopted.
