Praise him, fair idols of your greedy sense; Exalt his name, sweet age of innocence.

XIX.

Jehovah's name shall only last,

When heav'n and earth, and all is past; Nothing great GOD, is to be found in thee, But inconceivable eternity.

XX.

Exalt, O Jacob's sacred race,

The GoD of GODS, the GOD of GRACE; Who will, above the stars, your empire raise,

And with his glory recompense your praise.

HYMN XVI. L. M.

Sin and Holiness.

I.

HAT jarring natures dwell within, Imperfect grace, remaining sin! Nor this can reign, nor that prevail, Tho' each by turns my heart assail.

II.

Now I complain, and groan, and die,
Now raise my songs of triumph high;
Sing a rebellious passion slain,
Or mourn to feel it live again.

III.

One happy hour beholds me rise,
Borne upwards to my native skies,
While faith assists my soaring flight
To realms of joy, and worlds of light,

IV.

Scarce a few hours or minutes roll,
Ere earth reclaims my captive soul;
I feel its sympathetic force,

And headlong urge my downward course.

V.

How short the joys thy visits give ;
How long thine absence, LORD, I grieve!
What clouds obscure my rising sun,
Or intercept its rays at noon!

VI.

[Again the spirit lifts his sword,
And power divine attends the word;
I feel the aid its comforts yield,
And vanquish'd passions quit the field.]

VII.

Great God, assist me thro' the fight, Make me triumphant in thy might; Thou the desponding heart canst raise, The victory mine, and thine the praise.

HYMN XVII.

C. M.

The Riches of God's Word..

I.

ET avarice, from shore to shore,
Her fav'rite god pursue;

Thy word, O LORD, we value more
Than India or Peru.

II.

Here mines of knowledge, love, and joy, Are open'd to our sight;

The purest gold without alloy,
And gems divinely bright.

III.

The counsels of redeeming grace
These sacred leaves unfold;
And here the Saviour's lovely face
Our raptur'd eyes behold,

IV.

Here light descending from above
Directs our doubtful feet:
Here promises of heavenly love
Our ardent wishes meet.

V.

Our num'rous griefs are here redrest, And all our wants supplied: Nought we can ask to make us blest, Is in this book denied.

VI.

For these inestimable gains,
That so enrich the mind,

O may we search with eager pains,
Assur'd that we shall find!

HYMN XVIII.

The Ceremonial Law.

I.

ISRAEL in ancient days,

Not only had a view

Of Sinai in a blaze,

But learn'd the Gospel too;

The types and figures were a glass,
In which they saw the Saviour's face.

II.

The Paschal sacrifice,

And blood-besprinkled door, Seen with enlighten'd eyes, And once apply'd with power, Would teach the need of other blood, To reconcile an angry God.

III.

The lamb, the dove, set forth
His perfect innocence,

Whose blood of matchless worth
Should be the soul's defence;
For he who can for sin atone,
Must have no failings of his own.

IV.

The scape-goat on his head
The people's trespass bore,
And, to the desert led,

Was to be seen no more;
In him our surety seem'd to say,
"Behold I bear your sins away.

V.

Dipt in his fellow's blood, The living bird went free; The type well understood, Express'd the sinner's plea; Describ'd a guilty soul enlarg'd,

And by a Saviour's death discharg'd.

VI.

JESUS, I love to trace,
Throughout the sacred page,

The footsteps of thy grace,
The same in ev'ry age;

O grant that I may faithful be
To clearer light vouchsaf'd to me.

HYMN XIX L. M.

BLOW ye

The Jubilee.

I.

LOW ye the trumpet, blow
The gladly solemn sound!

Let all the nations know,

To earth's remotest bound, The year of Jubilee is come; Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home.

II.

Exalt the Lamb of God,
The sin-atoning Lamb;
Redemption by his blood

Thro' all the lands proclaim: The year of Jubilee is come; Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home.

III.

[Ye, who have sold for nought
The heritage above;
Shall have it back unbought,
The gift of JESU's love:

The year of Jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home.
