I hate the sins that made thee mourn,
And drove thee from my breast.

V.

The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee.

VI.

So shall my walk be close with GoD,
Calm and serene my frame;
So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.

HYMN XXXVI. C. M.

O that I knew where I might find him.

[ocr errors]

I.

THAT I knew the secret place, Where I might find my God! I'd spread my wants before his face, And pour my woes abroad.

II.

I'd tell him how my sius arise
What sorrows I sustain ;

How grace decays, and comfort dies,
And leaves my heart in pain.

III.

He knows what arguments I'd take
To wrestle with my GOD;
I'd plead for his own mercy's sake,
And for my Saviour's blood.

IV.

My God will pity my complaints,
And heal my broken bones;
He takes the meaning of his saints,
The language of their groans.

V.

Arise, my soul, from deep distress,
And banish every fear;
He calls thee to his throne of grace,
To spread thy sorrows there.

HYMN XXXVII. P. M.

Come and welcome to Jesus Christ.

I.

NOME, ye sinners, poor and wretched,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore!

COM

JESSUS ready stands to save you,

Full of pity join'd with power:

He is able,

He is willing; doubt no more!

II.

Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
GOD's free bounty glorify:

True belief, and true repentance,
Every grace that brings us nigh-
Without money,

Come to JESUS CHRIST, and buy.

[ocr errors]

Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;

All the fitness he requireth,
Is to feel your need of him:
This he gives you;

'Tis his SPIRIT's rising beam.

Iv.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Lost and ruin'd by the fall!
If you tarry till your're better,
You will never come at all:
Not the righteous,

Sinners JESUS came to call.

V.

View him prostrate in the garden;
On the ground your MAKER lies!
On the bloody tree behold him;
Hear him cry, before he dies,
"It is FINISH'D:"

Sinner, will not this suffice?

VI.

Lo, th' incarnate GoD ascended,
Pleads the merit of his blood :
Venture on him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude;
None but JESUS

Can do helpless sinners good.

VII.

Saints and angels, join'd in concert,
Sing the praises of the LAMB;
While the blisful seats of heaven
Sweetly echo with his name.
Hallelujah!

Sinners, here may sing the same.

HYMN XXXVIII.

as 148,

Yet there is Room.

I.

E dying sons of men,
Immerg'd in sin and woe,
The gospel's voice attend,
Which JESUS sends to you:

Ye perishing and guilty come,
In JESU's arms there yet is room.

II.

No longer now delay,

Nor vain excuses frame:
He bids you come to-day,

Tho' poor, and blind, and lame:

All things are ready, sinner, come,
For every trembling soul there's roomt.

III.

Believe the heavenly word
His messengers proclaim;
He is a gracious LORD,

And faithful to his name:
Backsliding souls, return and come,
Cast off despair, there yet is room.

IV.

Compell'd by bleeding love,
Ye wand'ring sheep, draw ncar,
CHRIST calls you from above.
His charming accents hear

Let whosoever will now come :

In mercy's breast there still is room.

HYMN XXXIX.

C. M.

The Incarnation of Christ.

MOR

I.

ORTALS, awake, with angels join,
And chant the solemn lay;

Joy, love, and gratitude combine,
To hail th' auspicious day.

II.

In heaven the rapturous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Thro' all the shining legions ran,
And strung and tun'd the lyre.

III.

Swift thro' the vast expanse it flew.
And loud the echo roll'd;

The theme, the song, the joy was new,
'Twas more than Heaven could hold.

IV.

Down thro' the portals of the sky
Th' impetuous torrent ran;
And angels flew with eager joy
To bear the news to man.

V.

[Wrapt in the silence of the night Lay all the eastern world,

When bursting, glorious, heavenly light The wond'rous scene unfurl'd.]

VI.

Hark! the cherubic armies shout,
And glory leads the song:
