FIGURE 10.-North wing, plans, elevation, sections, September 1807. Benja
Latrobe. From: Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division

The 1806 presentation drawing (figure 3) was not realized other design (figure 10) shows plans, an elevation and sectio the north wing and includes a plan with the space listed as a mittee room. This plan is probably dated 1807. Latrobe would refer to it in his 1816 report and note that Congress adapted the plan of the north wing and that it was built as such.30 Figure 10 shows the flue system for that section of the Capitol.

Eighteen hundred and eight saw the development of extensive elaborate plans for the library. In this presentation, the space S-231 is again designated a reading room.31 The movement back forth of what function should have been assigned this room is not usual. The room assignments were changing constantly becaus the construction progress or lack of it.

Figure 4 is the plan and elevation of the complete library sp The gallery area is magnificent. It no longer, however, extends the reading room.

Figure 5 is the north end of the library. The powerful fan win on the attic level would have been the primary visual focus would have provided the desperately needed light.

Figure 11 is the study of the lower level of the library space. reading room is also shown in plan.

Figure 12 is an interesting detail of the molding planned for library as well as what appears to be a magnolia bud capital for so of the columns.

The fire of August 24, 1814, destroyed the interior of the west s of the north wing. When Latrobe came back to the Capitol (figure to rebuild, he made modifications. The great library space was brok up into three committee rooms.

The March 18. 1817. plan of the principal story includes a libra but it is no longer in the north wing. The great Library was mov to the west front. Charles Bulfinch, the third Architect of the Capit however, would be the architect to define that area.
