Lord Strathmore's horses come to the hammer in the Houghton Meeting, his lordship being about to go abroad. By the lamented death of Lord George Bentinck, a number of horses become disqualified for stakes in which his lordship had nominated them, including Surplice's engagement for the Royal Stakes, Second October Meeting, and for the Great Four-year-old Stake at Goodwood next year. In a paragraph of this kind, we feel it would be vain indeed to try to express the general sorrow occasioned by the unexpected decease of his lordship; while we may refer for his career and character on the turf to the January number of last year's (1847) magazine, in which a memoir, accompanied by a portrait, was given of this great sportsman and good man. The case of this worthy may furnish something of a key and a moral to the state of the times. Like the hero, who, when he went into battle, reckoned himself dead at the first shot, and counted every limb he carried home afterwards a clear gain, so goes the chevalier into the ring a dead man to begin with, every halfpenny he takes out of it is a profit far too clear to require the calculation of Cocker. In either case, too, the carelessness of courage is founded on the same glorious indifference of consequences. 66 The betting of the month on events still to come has not been very important. For the Derby, The Dutchman has, if possible, strengthened his position, while the Doncaster doings of Honeycomb, unlike those of Surplice, in no way contradict his Goodwood failure. We should hope his friends are nearly satisfied by this time. As Tadmor and others make a second essay this week, it would be idle to speak of the little done on them so far. For the first of the October handicaps we have drawn out rather a long list, but it is more length than strength, and requires no elucidation beyond that to be gathered from the current prices given.
