O "Jesus said.” This is part of what gar Saviour said at the last supper, after Judas was gone out to bargain with the
cf priests for betraying him, and the very night he was betrayed. John was et to our Saviour, and was therefore 2 ear-witness.
* I go my way,” &c. This was a distinct intimation that his life was at is close; and there are several other simlar intimations in this discourse. The recollection after he was risen of these instances of our Saviour's foreknowledge would have strengthened their faith, if after the certain knowledge they had of
his resurrection, and the possession in | themselves of preternatural powers, any
confirmation could have been requisite. bo (9) “ Sorrow.” They probably ex.
pected, even down to this time, that our Saviour's was to be a temporal kingdom, tee of the kingdoms of this world: when he had told them before that he should be betrayed and killed, though he also told then he should be raised again the third day, they were exceeding sorry ; (see ante 133. note on Luke xxiv. 45.) and It appears that our Saviour made his communications to them according as be found they had strength of mind to receive them. See in this very Gospel, Perse 12.
(r) “ The Comforter," i. e. " the 0.7. “ Holy Ghost, whom the Father will “ send in my name," John xiv. 26. “ the “ spirit of truth," John xiv. 17. "the “ spirit of truth, which proceedeth from " the Father, whom I will send unto “ you from the Father.” John xv, 26.
(s) “ Reprove the world,” i. e. esta- v. 8. blish to the rebuke of the world these three points ; ist, that the not believing on me was sin ; zdly, that mine is the true religion, because otherwise how could I go up to God; and, 3dly, that judgment is coming upon the prince of this world, the opposers of my religion, the worldly-minded. This judgment came most tremendously at the destruction of Jerusalem. (t) “ Of," i.e. concerning.

(y) “ Righteousness.” The gospel v. 10. dispensation. Christianity is often called “ righteousness," or the righteousness “ of God.” See James i. 20. (ante 146.) In Rom. iii. 21, 22, it is called “ the “ righteousness of God without the “ law,” (i.e. the Mosaic law) “even " the righteousness of God, which is by “ faith of Jesus Christ." See also Rom. i. 17. So Rom. x. 3. the gospel dispensation is called “ the righteousness of “ God," the law of Moses “their” (the Jews) " own righteousness.”

(n) “ Tribulation.” The prospect of v.33. « tribulation in the world” was not cal. culated to bring back such of our Sa. viour's followers as had once deserted him, nor to produce new converts. How then are we to account for the subsequent return of the apostles, their constancy and intrepidity, and for the num. bers who embraced Christianity? Upon the supposition that the disciples really saw our Saviour in several instances after his crucifixion, that they were enabled to speak languages they had never learnt, to perform miracles, and to execute other powers of the spirit, the whole is intelli. gible and natural ; were it not for this supposition, the thing seems unaccount. able.

2.& 6)“ Uttermost part of the earth.”
Our Saviour had told them before his crucifixion, in his noted prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem, Matt. xxiv. 14.
This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness
toto all nations, and then shall the "end" (i.e. the destruction of Jerutalem) “ come;" and accordingly the gospel was preached before the destruction of Jerusalem in Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy, as far north as Scythia, south a Ethiopia, east as Parthia and India, and west as Spain and Britain, 2 Newt. Proph. 156. This shews the zeal of the apostles, their conviction of the truth of what they preached, and God's as. Sistance to the cause. It shews too that
e gift of tongues, the power of speakTag languages they had never learnt, was not a mere display of God's power, nor a mere attestation from him that he was
with them, but an essential requisite for
(2) " Preach." See note on verse 8. v.se
(a) “ Baptized,” i. e. lives suitably v.id to his belief. For according to 1 Pet. iii. 21. “Baptism is not the putting away " of the filth of the flesh, but the an“ swer of a good concience towards " God.”
(6). “ These signs." The apostles v.1%. must have known whether they possessed and exercised these powers. This was a point in which they could not be deceived: The possession of these powers therefore was an undeniable assurance that God was with them, and a sufficient ground for defying all dangers, and braving all persecutions.
