IT has long been the desire of the compiler of the present work, (particularly of the Appendix,) to see a Hymn Book which might equally answer for all denominations of Christians, without being particularly objectionable to any. The work which he has adopted, as the basis of the present, comes the nearest to answering that purpose of any which he has seen; and with the additions which have been made, he thinks, cannot fail of giving general satisfaction. He takes this opportunity, therefore, of returning his grateful acknowledgements to the individuals who have so politely favoured him with the fruits of their labours, and of which he has availed himself in the present undertaking. As the names of the authors, so far as they were known, are affixed to their respective compositions; it is proper to mention that alterations have been made in several of the psalms and hymns, as well by former compilers, from whom many of them were transcribed, as by the present compiler; who is therefore unable to designate all the pieces that have been altered. It has been the object to make such a selection as may be acceptable to Christian professors in general; to accomplish which the present compiler has added his endeavour to those who have preceded him in this undertaking; and concerning what he has added he will only say, if it has, in the opinion of his brethren, improved the work in question, it will be the wish and reward of the Publisher. |
