THE epithet of National by which we have distinguished this Gazette, is not used ambitiously or presumptuously-from an overweening opinion of its claims or its prospects, as to national favour and adoption. The whole title exclusively refers to the spirit in which it will be conducted, and the objects to which it will be chiefly directed. We are neither wedded nor affianced to any sect; we disclaim all prepossessions and antipathies belonging to the old partydivisions; we shall consult no other interests than those of the nation, which depend upon the cultivation of all the virtues and charities, liberal sciences and useful arts. To write down or up any particular individual or set of individuals, is by no means our predetermined course. It would seem to us quite as justifiable systematically to frequent the highway for the purpose of rifling the purse of an eminent citizen, as to lay regular siege to his reputation, with the determination of utterly destroying it in all its parts, whether the well or ill-gotten. At the same time, it cannot, in our judgment, be much less deserving of reprehension, to construct political pageants, to gild wooden images, for the people to exalt and worship. We shall make opposition or bestow praise, only according to the relation which the character of measures and the reputation of men may, in our honest opinion, bear to the public weal.
