Messrs. Chambers have added, to their well known school series, "A Treatise on Etymology, by Dr. William Graham. Few studies present greater attractions than etymology, when once the study of the affinities of languages is entered upon; and even the most ignorant are curious to discover why such and such things should be In this little called by such and such names. work self-teachers will find much valuable assistance.

Men of the Time.-A new edition of this popular book is now ready, and appears to contain the names of almost everybody that has ever been heard of, together with what appears inevitable in a work of this nature, a very fair sprinkle of those fussy nobodies who so constantly thrust their names in one's face.

An

editor must have hard work with this class of
persons, and requires a pretty sharp pair of
scissors to keep the accounts of their miserable
selves within reasonable bounds. Take authors
for instance; here in a short compass we have
G. J. Adler, M. A. Albert, William A. Alcott,
Ven. G. Allen, A. T. Arwidson, B. G. Babing-
ton, Sir R. Barry, Rev. H. Bellows, Rev. W.
Blackley, Rev. J. Booth, and Sir G. F. Bowen.
It is sheer ignorance, and no doubt very culpable
ignorance on our part, but we certainly have no
recollection of these names, nor can we for the
very life call to mind any single thing they have
done, entitling them to be enrolled as eminent
authors amongst Men of the Time. If enrolled
at all, they should have been dismissed in few
lines; but the editor, doubtless, had a large
amount of pressure brought to bear upon him,
and had to reject the names of many more.
The volume contains the names of all those we
could think of by way of test, at least of all
those that had any real claims. The memoirs
are very well written, and generally convey all
the information that should be given of persons
who are still living. Altogether the work is one
that is now as indispensable as a peerage or
a dictionary. We would suggest that the next
edition should be printed on a larger page, so as
to form a less squat volume; and although Mr.
Bennett may be a Man of Time, his advertise-
ment, like his city clock, is a great nuisance,
and should not be admitted.

The Scottish Gael.-The question as to the origin of the Scottish Highlanders, is discussed by Mr. Robertson in anything but a temperate spirit. The scope of the work will be best discovered by its title, "Concise Historical Proofs respecting the Gael of Alban; or the Highlanders of Scotland, as descended of the Caledonian Picts, with the origin of the Irish Scots, or Dalriads, in North Britain, and their supposed Conquest over the Caledonian Picts, examined and refuted. Also the language of the Caledonian Picts, short notices regarding the Highland Clans, with Explanatory Notes, Maps, Illustrations, and Descriptions." A large amount of historical and antiquarian information is in this work employed to prove a fact about which all men who are not Scotch, seem profoundly indifferent.

to set at rest this vexed question of "Under-

selling" so often discussed in your

It has been a matter of great surprise to me
that none of your numerous correspondents on
the subject have ever alluded to the only point
which prevents them competing most success-
fully with Messrs. Bosworth, Gilbert, &c. &c.
I take for granted that my brother booksellers
are not sanguine enough to suppose, as Mr.
Bosworth seems to suggest, that we can revert
to the vexatious ticket system of some years
back, which attempted ineffectually to exclude
from the advantages of wholesale prices any
bookseller unless he undertook not to supply the
public except at a certain rate. I do not stop
to consider whether such a backward step is
politic; whether it is for the best interests of us
country booksellers; but whether it is possible.
The public have some interest, and, unless I am
much mistaken, will have some voice in the
matter.

[ocr errors]

They will say, truly enough, that they are now enabled to buy books at a cheaper rate than they used to do, and as a matter of course they buy more, to the benefit of our trade; and the attempt to deprive them of this advantage by a combination of certain booksellers, will naturally appear odious in their eyes. Besides, how many of us would consent to be fettered in this way? What would I and my brother booksellers here say, if my neighbours, the "fleshers,' had combined not to sell their meat except at a certain price, and if they were persecuting others of their trade who, possessing advantages in buying, or from some other cause, were able to charge their customers at a lower rate? We would at once say, that the power thus used was oppressive and mischievous, and totally opposed to the first principles of political economy.

Apply the case to bookselling. We ought not to revert to such a practice if we could-but above all, we could not if we would.

What we have to do, if we would retain the bookselling trade in our hands, is to compete with-not attempt to control-those whom we call the "undersellers," and this is to be done by availing ourselves of all those advantages which their position in the London market gives them of purchasing direct of the publishing

houses.

If you, Sir, as the organ of the Trade, will give me permission, I will, in your next publication, point out the remedy for the evils under which too many of us are suffering. I think I can make it clear that, from the nettle danger, we may pluck the flower safety.

For the present I will not intrude further upon you space, but beg to subscribe myself, A Country Bookseller, and

Your Obedient Servant,

VALUE OF MUSICAL COPYRIGHTS.-Messrs. Addison and Lucas, the well-known music publishers, having dissolved partnership, their copyrights have just been sold by Messrs. Puttick and Simpson, of Leicester Square. Amongst the pianoforte works were many pieces of Dr. W. S. Bennett, which ranged between £10 and £50 (bought by Cocks). Callcott's Pianoforte Half Hours, made prices from £10 to £105, the latter being the sum obtained for the "Mendelsshon" Half Hours (Hutchings.) Benedict's edition of Beethoven, £69. (Cocks.) Amongst the Songs were Barker's Dublin Bay," £57. (Blockley)-Barnett's "Little Fay," £49 10s. (J. Williams)-Dr. W. S. Bennett's Six Songs, £324. (Cocks)-Berger's "Broken Vows," £21. (Lucas)-Callcott's "Last Man," £89. (Cocks)-Glover's "Bashful Man," £104. (Brewer)-Hatton's "Kit the Cobbler," £39. (B. Williams) Hatton's "Tom the Tinker," £36. (B. Williams)-Hobbs' "Phillis," £89. (Cocks) -Land's "When sorrow sleepeth," £152. (Ditto) -Linley's "I cannot mind my wheel," £221. (J. Williams)-Linley's "Thou art gone from my gaze, £94. (Campbell)-Loder's "Path by the River," £57. (Cocks)-Nelson's "Madoline," £118. (Ditto)-H. Smart's "Singing through the rain," £113. (J. Williams)-Sporle's "Wishing gate," £56. (Ditto)-Wrighton's "Sing me an English Song," £82. (Cocks)— F. Abt's Ten Duetts, £110. (Oliphant) -The concerted vocal music comprised in Callcott's Glees, £25. (Cocks)-Hatton's Four-Part Songs, £446. (Ditto)-Reay's Four-Part Songs, £149. (Ditto)- H. Smart's Four-Part Songs, £91. (Ditto) Thomas' Welsh Melodies, £273. (Ditto)-Pratt's Anthems, sold for £88. (Novello). Amongst the Opera's were Balfe's "Blanche de Nevers," £65, "Puritan's Daughter," £159, "Armourer of Nantes," £124, "Letty," £39, all purchased by Messrs. Cock & Co. Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor,' £157. (Cocks)-Meyerbeer's "Huguenots," the words, of course, only copyright," £104 17s. (Ditto)-Wallace's "Love's Triumph," £230. (Ditto.) Mr. Costa's Oratorios, "Eli," produced £412, and "Naaman," £567, both purchased by Messrs. Cocks: the total amount reaching £13, 389.

Among the poems on our table, we may mention a second edition of Mr. Robert Buchanan's "Undertones" (A. Strahan). Mrs. Frederick Prideaux's "Claudia," a clever and well-designed epic, with this classic story for subject (Smith and Elder), and a collection entitled, "Intervals of Rest and Refreshment during the Heat and Burden of the Day; by a Labourer in the Vineyard." This little book is published by Messrs. Hatchard, and is distinguished by a preface by the Bishop of Ripon. From this we learn that the "Poems" in this volume "are not committed to the press because of being imagined to possess any merit as compositions in poetry. Their value, if any, consists merely in the sacred truths which they express." We presume that the intelligent reader will gather from the sentences quoted that the "Poems" are not particularly poetical; and from the involved and awkward sentences of the Right Reverend preface-writer, we should suppose he had no great love for his subject, and no very high opinion of his author. But bishops, like princes, perhaps, are "above grammar." "Undertones" contains some real poetry,-fresh, genial, and manly; poetry that takes the eye and the imagination prisoner, delighting both, and

wearying neither; poetry that is full of human interest, not merely jingle and pretty conceit, but homely sentiments and touching pathos, that go at once to the heart.

Our Dutch friends have started a veritable Penny Illustrated Magazine which is now in its second year; the brothers Binger are the publishers, the price one Stiver. The number for this week has, by way of illustration, a good perspective View of Vienna; a Copy of Goodall's Way to the Market; Sea Bathing, a large cut by Doré; and portraits of the Emperor and Empress of Austria. The letterpress gives descrip

tions of the cuts, a humorous account of the Kermip or fair just over at Amsterdam, "Nieuwtjes van den Dag," or news of the day, in which full justice is done to the fearful Fenian insurrection in Ireland. Their Belgian neighbours get well laughed at for dismissing the author of "Les propordi Labienus," and other matter of interest to the readers, and creditable to the proprietors of De Hollandsche Illustrate.

A STUNNING SERMON.-The Rev. A. Mursell, of Manchester, in delivering a lecture at Birmingham, said of the first sermon he wrote:"It was read by my fellow-students, and, on its conclusion, one recommended me to burn it as soon as I got near enough to the fire. But I didn't do it. I kept it, and preached it once, at the top of my voice, in a village chapel, before seventeen intelligent people. Before I had gone far with my sermon an old lady fainted, and then a young lady went into hysterics; and, as it took two men and four women to take each lady out, there were only three left, and of these, before I had finished, two were asleep, and one was deaf."

Under the title of "Post-Mediaval Preachers," Mr. S. Baring Gould has produced a series of biographical and theological sketches of Gabriel Biel, Matthias Faber, Francis Coster, and other preachers of the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. To the theological student, much less the general reader, several of the names here given will be probably unfamiliar, but as their works were remarkable in their day for originality, depth. and piety, the extracts from their sermons, and specimens of their writings-now published by Messrs. Rivington, will be found an interesting companion volume to Dr. Neale's "Medieval

Preachers."

Lives of the British Poets.-Shakespeare, Milton, Cowper, Pope, Goldsmith, Byron, Wordsworth, Moore, Scott, Burns, Beattie, and Thomson, are the poets included in Mr. Nimmo's "Lives of the British Poets." To the biographical notanda, there are in each case added extracts, more or less characteristic of the popular idea of the man. The memoirs add nothing new to our knowledge of the several poets, but they are correctly and genially written. The volume is published by Mr. Nimmo, uniform in price, size, and binding with his edition of the poets.

"Engineering Facts and Figures for 1864," is the title of a valuable work edited by Mr. Andrews Betts Brown, mechanical engineer. It contains numerous and important references to recent improvements and alterations in the coustruction of steam engines, steam fire-engines, boilers, &c.; chain cables and anchors, iron ships, the manipulation of metals, building materials, bridges, machinery, and engineering works generally; with brief notices of various chemical and scientific discoveries and adaptations.
