Journal of Wednesday, January 10th, corrected and approved. Journal of Thursday, January 11th, corrected and approved. Mr. Eaton requested that he be excused and that he be recorded as voting for the Hon. John H. Gear for United States senator for the term beginning March 4, 1901.

There being no objection, the request was granted.

Mr. Dows moved that the House proceed to nominate and elect a United States senator.

Carried.

Mr. Wilson of Keokuk, in behalf of the republicans, placed in nomination Hon. John H. Gear.

Mr. McGinn, on behalf of the democrats, placed in nomination Hon. Fred E. White.

There being no other nominations the roll call was ordered. Those voting for Hon. John H. Gear were:

Mr. Gear, having received a constitutional majority, was declared elected by the House as United States senator for the term commencing March 4, 1901.

On request of Mr. Temple, leave of absence was granted Mr. Sokol indefinitely on account of sickness.

Mr. Prentis offered the following resolution and moved its adoption:

Be it resolved, By the House, the Senate concurring: That a joint convention be held in the hall of the House on Wednesday, January 17, 1900, at 12 o'clock noon, as required by law.

Adopted.

On motion of Mr. Scott the House took a recess for fifteen minutes.

MESSAGE FROM THE SENATE.

The following message was received from the Senate:

MR. SPEAKER-I am directed to inform your honorable body that the Senate has concurred in the following concurrent resolution, in which the concurrence of the Senate was asked:

Resolution relative to joint convention for the election of United States senator.

On request, Mr. Sweet was excused until January 22d.
Journal of January 16th corrected and approved.

Speaker pro tem Temple took the chair at 10:15 o'clock A. M.

Messrs. Kimball and Myers requested that the Journal show that they would have voted for the Hon. John H. Gear for United States senator had they been present.

Mr. Blume, requested that the Journal show that he would have voted for the Hon. Fred E. White, for United States senator had he been present,

Mr. Cowles, for the joint committee relative to selecting a mail carrier, report as follows:

MR. SPEAKER-Your committee appointed by the Senate and House to select a mail carrier, report that they have had the matter under conderation, and have selected John W. Omer, from Fremont county, for the position of mail carrier of the Twenty-eight General Assembly from this time until and including the second day of March, 1900, and have selected J. C. Heffelfinger from Grundy county for said position from and after the second day of March, 1900.
