he be ordered so to do. We take and execute a man who kills against law, but we make a hero of a man who kills his hundreds by law, haps make him President of the U. S. Such is the consistency of man! It cannot be that we pause and reflect upon this subject as we should. I am acquainted with men who uphold this war system, that possess feeling hearts, but are sadly led astray by the noise and brilliancy of "millitary glory!" O! brethren

"Can it be that life was given,

To be thus wantonly destroyed?
Can christians lift their front to Heaven,
And glory in being thus employed?

Forbid, forbid the impious thought,
Great God of Mercy! Great God of Grace!
Whose Holy word hath ever taught
The brotherhood of all our race!

Can He, whose everlasting throne
Is based on justice, truth and love,
Hear with delight the victim's groan,
And carnage, blood and death approve!
The widow's shriek-the orphan's tear,
Will these delight the angelic throng?
And will they cease their harps, to hear
Such sounds as sweeter than their songs?

O for a trumpets stirring blast

To wake the world from its false dream
Of glory-and to bid it cast

Its idols in Oblivion's stream!"

We bless God, that this subject, of overcoming

evil with good, has the approbation of the noblest

intellects of the age, both in this and foreign
countries. Not long since, the Anti-war Soci-
ety, in Glasgow, believing in the brotherhood of
man, sent over to this country, a powerful and
thrilling address upon wAR, and exhorted us to
take hold with them in their efforts to promote
Peace among the nations. The address is clo-
sed, by saying "Friends and brethren, help us.
Let us unite our efforts to suppress the rising
spirit of war. If our rulers will have war, let
them go out to shoot or to be shot. We labor
to avert a calamity that would overspread both
nations with lamentation and mourning. Our
interests are one; our habits of social and
domestic life are essentially one. Our litera-
ture, our language, our religion, are essentially
the same.
We look to the same Being, and say,
"Our Father." We go to the same Redeemer ;
we wait before the same throne of the same God;
the desolating storm of war is impending over
us. In the name of the Prince of peace let us
say to one another, and to all around us, "PEACE
BE STILL!" "Let there be no strife between
us, for we are brethren."

"Let us learn there's something far better and higher,
Than pouring on weak ones our Navy's red fire ; \
Learn to o'erlook all the wrongs we receive,
Learn to have faith in the heart and believe

That the Maker of souls, in his Gospel of Truth,

Has given us more than the scriptures of Ruth:
Learn to be gentle, and never to wreak,
Wrong or revenge on the helpless and weak:
Learn to depart from the wicked Death angel:
Learn to do reverence to Christ's great Evangel!''

DISCOURSE, No. III.

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you: That ye may be the children of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust."-Matthew, V: 43, 44, 45.

I PURPOSE entering upon a subject, at this time, that is very unpopular at the present day. I mean the christian doctrine of "non-resistance!" Believing, as I do, that this doctrine lies at the foundation of practical Universalism, that no man can be a true genuine Universalist, who is not a non-resistant in theory and practice, I feel it to be my duty to enter upon an investigation of this subject, and attempt to show that, as a denomination of professing Christians, we have something more to do, than to believe God will save all his children in the future world. It is to be regretted that like other denominations, the great majority of Universalists, are not dis

posed to practice the plain simple requirements of Jesus-to "Love enemies"-to "Resist not evil." They have lived so long, and practised so much after the manner of Partialists, that like them they have settled down in the belief that they can return evil for evil, and smiting for smiting, with God's approbation. It is singular that they cannot see that they are practising Judaism, and do in fact deny the very Christ who shed his blood for them. With me christianity means something. God forbid that I should leave Christ, disregard his precepts and examples, and go back to those old barbarous institutions, that required life for life, blood for blood! We should realise that we are Christians--not Jews-that we are living under Christ's kingdom, which speaks plainly and emphatically to all who profess his name- "Love your ene

mies!"

The heathen Chinese might send their Missionaries to America and teach us love to man. In fact, it is said that great pains were taken not long since to prevent a Chinese convert, who was travelling in our country, from examining our laws and institutions, for fear that he would return to his native land disgusted with our Christian Slavery, (?) Christian War (?) and Christian Gallows. (?) O! what a commentary
