his people a new heart, and to put his fpirit within them; for CHRIST hath made peace by the blood of bis cross: therefore he justifieth the ungodly that believerb, purifying their hearts by faith. Thus,

without any works of thine, or defert on thy part; GOD in CHRIST reconciles thee unto himself, and pours out of his fpirit upon thee; for, for this very caufe was the Son of GOD manifefted, that he might destroy the works of the Devil, and fave his people from their fins.As by the firft Adam's tranfgreffion, thou art made a guilty, helplefs, undone creature; fo, by the fecond Adam's righteousness, thou, believing, art juftified, and faved for ever.

To the only wife GOD, our SAVIOUR, be glory and dominion for ever. Amen.

SERMON IV.

ROMANS V. 19.

As by one man's disobedience many were made finners, fo by the obedience of one fall many be made righteous.

N thefe words are evidently contained two dif ftinct propofitions :

IN

FIRST; Adam's tranfgreffion, with its destructive influence on his pofterity.-By one man's disobedience many were made finners.

SECONDLY; The righteoufnefs of CHRIST, with its faving influence on his people. By the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous.

THE firft of thefe we have already difcuffed: wherein it appears that Adam was a public perfon, representing all mankind. That his tranfgreffion was

imputed

imputed to all men, and fo became the very cause and fource of all that corruption of nature, depra vity, and wretchedness, to which mankind in this world are fubject: and that this appointment and conftitution was by the fovereign will, and juft judgment of GOD.

BUT, in the midst of wrath, GOD remembered mercy, and manifested his love to man, by fending JESUS CHRIST, his only begotten Son, the Antitype, the first Adam, (who was alfo before him, but came into this world after him) to fave his people from their fins*: thus was the HOLY ONE of GOD fubftituted in the room of finners; in which difpenfation of grace towards fallen man, the fovereignty, and righteousness of God is most awfully confpicuous, and glorious. For as by one man's difobedience many were made finners, fo by the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous.

FOR the more diftinct explanation of this fecond part of our Text: I shall

1. CONSIDER the perfon obeying; who, and what he was.

2. 1 SHALL endeavour to fhew what his obedience

was.

3. FOR

* Matt. i. 21.

3. FOR whom it was performed.

4. How we are made righteous by another's obedience.

5. By whom, and when, it is imputed to us..

6. How the bleffing of GOD attends its imputation, with the most powerful and faving influ

ences.

LASTLY, Conclude with an Application.

FIRST; by the perfon obeying, is meant our LORD, JESUS CHRIST, as is evident from the context: wherein he is manifeftly opposed to the first Adam; his righteoufnefs to Adam's unrighteoufnefs; and the grace of God to man thro' CHRIST, to the curfe which came upon him thro' Adam.

BUT the conftitution of this person is wonderful; he is called, the LORD from heaven*,-the Son of Mant; and alfo the Son of GOD : whence it appears that in CHRIST are united two diftinct natures, the one divine, the other buman.-The Word which was with GOD, and was GOD, was also made flesh : he united himself unto, and was manifefted in, the human nature: thus GOD was in CHRIST reconciling
